Happy New Year everyone.

I'm waiting for VM Diesel Specialists to come back from the holiday break. In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out the piston weight issue. Here are the weights of all four of my pistons with the 0.125" top ring width. I'm anticipating how to calculate the difference between the old style pistons (0.125") and the new style (0.095").

What do these numbers mean? (49:04 and 2091F)

Piston #1

Piston #2

Piston #3

Piston #4

I completely don't know on that one.

Hazarding a guess, it might possibly be a code for tracking a product run or machine setting, in case they begin having a manufacturing defect issue.

But again, that's just a Wildass guess.

If I had to guess, the 49:04 marking may be date of manufacture - 49th week of 2004. This is total speculation on my behalf, based on experience with reading similar date codes from ICs, and as such may have no bearing on reality whatsoever :)

As for the other number, no idea. My first thought was that it may be somehow related to temperature given the 'F' (for Fahrenheit) at the end, but as the engines were made in Italy using Celsius would make more sense in that case. A batch number could be a possibility, but that's also a total guess.

Visited VM Motori website and sent a message asking about the markings on the piston tops. I'll post the reply when it comes in. casm, you may be right with the insight of the manufacture date: 49th week of 2004. That would fall right into line for piston inventory in a 2005 engine.

While there, I noticed the names of the founders of the motor company: Claudio Vancini and Ugo Martelli. Hence VM Motori. (plural in Italian is Motori, singular is Motoro)

While perusing the website, I grabbed this piece of history...

Today I received a reply from VM Motori about the weight of the pistons...

Dear sender,
I'm out of office with limitated access to the mail.
I'll be back on January the 10th

I, like most Americans, live in a state of instant gratification. This is completely out of my comfort zone. :banghead:

Received a reply from VM Diesel Specialists today. They are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Chloe informed me there are three ring thicknesses for our 2.8L CRD engines. (2.2mm/0.087", 2.4mm/0.095", and 2.8mm/0.110")

Scratching my head, I re-measured the rings and learned another interesting fact, which explains a quandary I had before. When I fiddled with the rings still on the piston, they didn't seem to fit well -- the slot seemed worn out and larger than the ring. I thought I had 0.095" rings in a 0.125" groove. Hmmm.

Upon closer investigation, I found we have very complex rings. We have shallow Keystone rings that are also Stepped rings. Below is a description of a few types...

Rectangular rings are the normal compression ring. We don't have these.
Image

Our top (compression) ring is a stepped ring, with the step on the top side.
Image

Our rings are Keystone rings, although shallow Keystone, not 15-20 degrees as mentioned in the write up in the link below.
Image

We do not have Half Keystone rings. I include this because the bottom side seemed less angled than the top side.
Image

Here is a link that explains the Keystone style ring a little better.
https://www.engineaustralia.com.au/~eng ... /SB014.pdf

My work phone is an Apple 7s and it takes really good close up pictures. Especially when the X2 lens is used.
Here is a close up of our top compression ring. The Keystone shape is easily identifiable. Also the stepped shape.
Image

Here is our tapered piston groove. It took me a couple tries to get a good shot.
Image

I wondered why the piston groove cleaner didn't seem to have any blades that would fit. Now I understand about Keystone rings and it all makes sense. Claudio Vancini and Ugo Martelli had some really good ideas.

A bit of advice! You can use a used hacksaw blade to clean out the carbon in the piston land groove on a tapered groove like this. Just go slow and don't get to over aggressive and use lots of brake cleaner! Used this old timers method many times in years past when we encountered oddball size piston grooves that we did not have a groove cutter that would fit when rebuilding engines back when I worked at a automotive garage & machine shop...

While searching for something else, I came across these pictures: http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=83956&start=30#p888730. One of the pistons is real easy to read, and it says "45:05". His signature says the jeep has a build date of 03/06 so that one also fits the "week:year" theory.

The pistons in the other thread say 2091F as well ... I think that may be the last digits of the VM Motori part number. The new-style piston listed on idparts is 10252098F so I'm thinking the 2091F is short for 10252091F. Googling that part number (10252091F) brings up references to "vm motori piston assy" as well.

Hmm, interesting! Well, good to know that it at least sounds plausible. Cool :)

Thanks casm, joe_, WWDiesel,

casm: I wondered about the part number but dismissed it. Now it makes sense. Too bad it's not the weight of the piston. I did weigh the piston and it came to 1 lb. 14 oz / 868 grams, so I dismissed the markings as the weight too. I'm in the middle of a conversation with VM Diesel Specialists for new parts. It sounds like they may carry an older piston to match my 2005 piston. They apparently do carry the rings.

joe_: The date code does make sense. Dec of 2004 would easily sift through inventory and fall into a 2005 vehicle assembly line. I used to work with ICs as well; I should have thought of the date code myself.

WWDiesel: Using a hacksaw blade to clean the ring grooves sounds like a good idea. I'll first use a thin piston groove cleaner to smooth the bottom of the groove, then use the back of the hacksaw blade to clean the sides. Only use the cutting teeth side carefully to get the hard spots. I may start with some Easy Off oven cleaner.

Dean.

Cleaned up the engine bay today. It will be good to start with a completely clean machine. In the process I found the battery cover from my flashlight.

Quote:
The [turbo oil return tube] flange was a little askew but could pry it into place with a screwdriver. After a couple screwdriver bombings on the forehead :dizzy: , and the flashlight falling down and leaving the battery cover inside the Jeep framework; it was time to quit.

Sent an email to VM Diesel Specialists on Friday requesting the repair parts. I expect to get a reply Monday with a total. To buy from them in England, I have to call in the middle of the night to do a telephone credit card transaction. They are in time zone 00Z and I'm in -10Z; almost on the opposite side of the globe. The total parts bill is comprising...

  • 1 used piston with 0.110"/2.8mm keystone top ring groove with used rings
  • 1 new cylinder sleeve
  • 4 new cylinder sleeve o-rings and shim sets
  • 4 new sets of piston rings
  • 4 new wrist pin bushings
  • 1 used connecting rod
  • 4 new con rod bearings
  • 1 used injector
  • 2 new intake valve guides
  • 1 used oil pump
  • 1 new complete set gaskets
  • 1 new front main seal
  • 1 new rear main seal
Chloe is very good at identifying my mistakes, and finding used stock in place of new items as appropriate. I will include prices and freight charges when I can.

Bought 2 intake valves and 2 exhaust valves from IDParts.

Dean.

Gordnado & WWDiesel,

The pricing is far better than IDParts and the shipping is cheaper also.

Yes, only replacing the valves in the #3 cylinder. The rest are good. The machinist is touching up all the valves. He does good work so I don't have any problem with his judgement.

During the last few days I have been confronted with purchasing (1) internationally and (2) through VM Diesel Specialists.
(1) International money is not "international". Instead I have to convert USD to British Pounds during the transaction. I do not understand the issues, but the bank adds fees for any little tidbit. Sending $1450 to England and having it arrive in BP cost $80 at this end plus an unknown fee at the other end. Well, I'm not in that much of a hurry. I plan to get a Cashier's Cheque and mail it to them. Not sure if I can get a US check in British Pounds, or if I even have to.

(2) VM Diesel Specialists does accept credit cards over the phone, but it has a limit of £500 BP ($675 USD). In my latest email which will be read by Chloe at 8 AM (England time) / 10 PM (Hawaii time), I am asking if we can break this invoice into 3 separate invoices. News at 11.

I don't have International Calling included in my phone plan, so I thought may I can set my phone up for IP calling. My only choice is Wi-Fi Calling. Unfortunately that only makes your phone functional through a WiFi connection but does still not allow international calling. It does, however, allow me to be anyplace on the globe where WiFi is available, but I can still only call USA numbers. :banghead:

This is all an excellent learning experience so I'm continuing to see it through. So far VM Diesel Specialist (Chloe) has been very helpful and nice.

Dean.

Only reason I asked,
Just bear in mind the history of dropped or broken exhaust valves on this engine.
Quite a few reports of them on this forum along!

If I ever pull my head for any reason, I will replace ALL the exhaust valves....

Thanks WWDiesel,

I don't want to haul this bugger out again. It seems prudent to change 'em while it's out. Thanks.

Ordered the remaining exhaust valves from IDParts. Says they've shipped. Probably see them in 10 days.

Oy Vey!

Went to the Credit Union today and they said they can only send US Dollars, and cannot guarantee the money will arrive as needed. But the $80 charge is non-refundable. They suggest I go to Wal-Mart Money Transfer Service and use my Visa to get a cash advance there to process the funds. Cash advance!?!, I said. So I withdrew $1500 and went to Wal-Mart. They use Ria and MoneyGram.

I have refused to shop at Wal-Mart for over 10 years because they pay women less than men, their wages are low, and the government subsidizes them because their employees qualify for welfare and food stamps. But I went anyway.

The lady at the Money Transfer counter started a transfer but stopped saying the information she needs does not match her computer screen entry areas. So I stepped aside and called Ria customer service. Only two options 1) Find a Ria location. 2) Check status of an existing transaction.

So I called MoneyGram, and talked to a person. They agreed to speak with the counter lady. Got back in line and eventually spoke with the same counter person. Called back and handed her the phone and MoneyGram walked her through the process. Still can’t – the information is not correct. (I think the manager lady I got simply did not want to be at work that day) She suggested I go to Western Union.

It’s 6 PM now, they’re closed.

Chloe,

I give up. Tomorrow I will go to the Credit Union and transfer the funds to NatWest Bank. Sorry to have taken so long, but this has dragged out way too long.

I’ll let you know when it goes through. You should see my email and be able to verify the deposit Monday morning.

Thanks for your patience.

Dean.

Hi,

There is no other way of doing it without any bank charges. We could do card but we cannot take card payments over £500 also we then loss around another £60.00 so it is no better.

Thanks
Chloe.

Chloe,

Called the smart people in the bank to wire the money today and was blindsided with the cost ($80 USD/£59 BP) for an hour of “wire time” at my end – plus an unknown amount of charges at the receiving end.

Are there some alternative methods? Can I split the invoice into 3 and use a credit card for 3 transactions? Can I get a Cashiers’ Check and mail it to VMDS? Any other methods? PayPal or other Internet payment service? If I have to pay any premiums, I would prefer to give them to VMDS instead of a bank or money transfer service.

I will attempt to set up my phone to make Internet IP (VOIP) calls. If successful, I will contact you around 9 AM British time. If not successful, I will send an email.

Dean Towle.

Hi,

Sorry the invoice i attached yesterday for for another customer. I have attached the original invoice again and added a set of head bolts to it and extra shipping costs, so it is a lot easier.

The street address of the NatWest bank is: 5 Market Place, Chesterfield, S40 1TW.

Let me know if the bank transfer goes through.

Thanks
Chloe.

Chloe,

I am very sorry to announce that the Idiocracy has hit Hawaii. Today I attempted to transfer the funds to VMDS but the Customer Support lady insisted I provide the physical address of the bank. Certainly this person only knows enough to fill out the blanks on the paper.

Tomorrow I will make another attempt. Please provide the street address.

I would like to offer a huge apology to the world for the idiocy of American workers. It is even worse in Hawaii than mainland USA.

I was planning to send the entire amount on the original invoice; is that okay? If not, can I pay the additional £75.96 via credit card?

Hi,

The only slow option postage we can offer is up to 2 kilos and all the below mentioned parts will weigh more so it will have to be sent by DHL.

The valve guides are £22.40 each. We have as new valve guides removed from low mileage cylinder heads and we can supply x2 for £15.00 and postage will be £14.50 this is for a signed and trackable service. If you would like to order these immediately then please phone the office with your card details. There will be a 3.4% charge on top of the bill to cover card charges.

cylinder sleeve- £44.20
seal and shims kit for cylinder sleeve- £13.33 each x4
1 complete engine gasket set- £156.00.
Front oil seal is £7.70
Rear oil seal is £31.99
Con rod bearing are £9.72 each x4.
Little end bushes are £7.33 each x4
Oil pump- currently not in stock checking on availability with the factory.

Postage will be a little more expensive due to the weight of the items.

Thanks
Chloe.

Thanks Chloe,

The slower postage will be fine, but I’ll be adding some more parts.

The head is being worked on locally, I need 2 intake valve guides. Can you send those immediately? Do you have a payment process on the website?

Please add the following items to the (1) piston & (3) rings order...
Complete gasket set, plus front and rear main seals.
Bearings (Rod main (4), and wrist pin bushings(4). I am not changing the crank main journal bearings)
Oil pump.
Cylinder sleeve (1) to match the above piston & rings.
Cylinder sleeve shims and o-rings (4).

Thanks.
Dean Towle.

Hi,

The new pistons will come with new rings fitted so you will only need another x3 sets of rings.

The piston is £173.00.

Piston ring sets are £35.40 each x3.

Postage via DHL will be £55.00 and this will usually take around 2 days to arrive. Or postage via Royal Mail on much slower service will be £29.50.

Thanks
Chloe.

Chloe,

Thanks for catching my error.

Measured my top ring, it is 0.012” (2.8mm), and to my surprise it is a Stepped Keystone ring. I would hope to get one new piston with 2.8mm top ring groove, and a complete set of rings for all four pistons.

I have questions about other parts too, but I’d like to get this subject settled first.

Hi,

I am a little confused because i thought the top ring measured 2.8mm and not 3.175mm. We have piston rings kits that have 2.2mm,2.4mm and 2.8mm top rings.

The above measurements are measuring the height or thickness of the piston ring in a vertical plane as the ring is fitted into the piston. Please can you re-check the measurements because the 2.8mm is the thickest one that VM make.

The price of the injector is £238.00.

Thanks
Chloe.

Happy New Year VM Diesel Specialists,

I am anxiously awaiting your return to work in hopes of buying parts to get my 2.8L purring again. The poor mechanized beast has suffered a glug of water that destroyed cylinder #3.

To get the lower end fixed, I need to replace #3 sleeve, piston, rings, rod, and (injector B445117354-01 or 0445110 217).

My first quest is to find out if I can get only one piston (with 0.125” / 3.175 mm top ring), or if I need to purchase a pair of pistons (with 0.095” / 2.413 mm) top rings. My piston weight(?) is marked as 49.04 and 2091F on all pistons.

After that decision, I then need a full set of gaskets & seals, and bearings, and front and rear main seals.

Please see attached .PDF, but I can send Windows Excel file.

. . . . . wow. :dizzy:

You're buying OEM head bolts?
If they haven't already been bought, I'll send you a new set unopened.
I put mine on with ARP studs. I've never found a TTY application that I could trust with this type of engine. Not just VM, but pretty much all auto turbo-diesels.
But if that's what you want to use, you can have mine if you want them. Let me know.
Sounds like you need a :5SHOTS: break, or hit the range with a few boxes of whatever you like to shoot. :goink: I know I would.
