Ha! Sooo, my 03 4x4 KJ has been making some strange noises that happen in 2wd but get much worse in 4x4. I checked the cv prop shaft and think I found the noise. There is rotational play and the squeaky rattling sound when I rotate the prop shaft. Here is a video. https://youtu.be/TdEFg7MBcyc

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on what might be wrong and how to fix it.

You will likely have to replace the two CV joints on your front driveshaft.

Thanks Flash! I see there are some rebuild kits for just the CV joints. I was wondering if full replacement of the whole assembly is the way to go or if the CV rebuilds hold up over time. Any experience out there?

Start with replacing the tc side cv. The diff side typically doesn't go too often.

The diff side feels like it's still fine, though I'm no expert. CV side was thrashed. I have been hearing so many horror stories about the rebuild kits that I am nervous about going through all that just to have it fail again. Was wondering if anyone has used the CCI Driveline upgraded rebuild service or if it might be possible to take their instructional pdf to a local shop to have it replicated.

https://www.ccidriveline.com/jeep/liber ... shaft.html

On the TC side, "The replacement shaft offered features a flanged u-jointed constant velocity joint that will take the place of the failed OE fixed ball and cage CV with the use of a billet aluminum adapter". The diff side stays the same but is rebuilt.

Back in 2013 I found mine, the one on transfer case end, was toast.
Ordered and replaced just the TC end CV joint and boot. Diff end was still in good shape.
Still working perfect to this day with no problems or issues. :D
Cost was about 50 bucks or so.
(note: I removed the front drive shaft and drove the jeep for a couple of weeks until I got the part and had time to replace it)

See this tech thread for how to:> viewtopic.php?f=98&t=77641

Thanks WWD! That was actually the thread I was reading where so many others posted that they were having problems with the rebuild kits failing after very few miles. I wonder if user error was a big part of it or if the parts are just that crappy? I too have been driving with the front shaft out for a while now but want to get all 4 wheels turning again!! :JEEPIN: :JEEPIN:

The parts that I purchased from Detroit Axle were quality parts back in 2013 when I replaced it.
I did take the time to pack it good with CV joint grease and reseal the metal end cover which required rolling the metal lip back into an outer grove like the OEM joint was from the factory.
As to others having early failures I cannot explain! Mine is still going strong with no issues.
CV joint failures usually occurs when a boot cracks open and all grease is lost and dirt and contaminants get into the joint and wear out the balls and races.
