You don't have to remove the side panels completely. You will have to get the rear corners loose to access the tray bolts in the rear corners. Remove the side tie downs, Pull the bottom cover (by hatch) up (clips) and pull the top headliner rear strip down(clips). This will allow more flex in the side panels.

i know this is old, but what was the purpose of removing the cargo tray for you Scar0? im considering removing the tray to gain a few more inches of storage for camping stuff. likely building a drawer system this winter for camping and such. storage underneath would be for tools and recovery gear. maybe even a small folding table. can i build a platform from exisiting studs under the tray? or is the effort not worth the reward and just build on top of the tray?
