In the Transgo catalog write up for this kit it indicates that removal of the transmission is not required, yet it includes a HD snap ring for the input drum? Can the complete kit, with the exception of the snap ring, be installed with out removing the trans? During a fluid and filter change for example?

You can do the valve body stuff without removing it but you need to have it out to do the pump upgrades and snap ring. Look it up on YouTube there are a couple of videos to walk you through it. I pull the trannys on the ones I flip anyways to replace the converter... It may help that I have my shop to use on the weekends :)

Without pulling the transmission, only the valve body part of the kit can be installed. :(
That is why you will read by most posters that it is always recommended to replace the front pump assembly with the newer style along with installing a TransGo Kit while the transmission is out of the vehicle for any reason or when replacing the torque converter.

The transgo kit upgrades the front pump so it is the same as the new pump without replacing the pump, I talked with transgo to confirm what they wrote up, mopar changed the pump so it now comes similar to the way it is with their kit

Read the instructions.
You need a special tool to perform the transgo pump upgrade.

I have read the instructions, I have done these kinds of things before without getting the miller tools but I would recommend taking it to a pro to do that portion. At my shop we usually can get things done without some special tools, it is amazing how many special tools are similar so one from another car works, or worst case we just make the tool we need, we have a mill and lathe so we do make things from time to time

It takes a very specifically shaped single purpose reamer which is very expensive, and a single purpose alignment jig to hold the reamer, to enable the new hydraulic valve and spring to fit. It is even more expensive than the reamer.

Doing it by hand with a drill or mill-end will not work, as it is impossible for human hands to produce work precise enough for the new valve to work properly.

Sonnax is the only aftermarket tool source producing tools that work as well as the Miller (OEM) tools, and all of the trans shops I know of use one of these two. I know of 2 shops that have tried other brands, and ended up with product returns before they switched to Sonnax.

So, if I'm understanding you correctly: if the front pump is replaced with the redesigned unit, the Transgo kit isn't needed?

I'd really like to hear more of the details regarding this. The current plan is to do the transmission upgrades somewhere in the Thanksgiving timeframe, and this throws my game plan off a bit.

You still want to upgrade the spring (accumulator I think) with either the sonax or transgo kits. It's installed in to the new style pump with simple tools. The reamer is needed if you want to use an old pump, which is probably about worn out anyhow...
I think you can get the spring separately, but you can definitely get it for reasonably cheap with the sonax line booster kit (has electrical connector and spring). About $70 if I remember correctly. But, if you want the shift kit anyhow (transgo) then it comes with a different but suitable replacement as well. The factory spring your replacing has a tendency to break.

forgive me I am not a transmission guy but have removed and replaced etc. I thought I remembered from ancient posts that there was a seal or ring that needed to be replaced if the old front pump was removed to put the transgo upgrade into it and that that part was no longer available.

Am I dreaming ? Can the part can be reused? If it exists what is the part?

I am asking just for informational purposes I am not trying lobby against need for new pump and noted special tool needed etc for upgrade of old pump. However, there might be a small market for a shop or individual to make old pumps available with the upgrade just keep one on hand to swap out for core though the old pump may still have limited life. Many will not put more than another 100,000 miles on their jeeps.

Also thanks Mass-Hole for the link to the hydraulic jack stands !!

Yup, you have to get the new front cover, as the old style seal is probably not available, although I thought I tracked one down at one point. I think the latest pump from ID parts comes with it, I'll go check right now if I can find the box...
Edit: the one I got about 6 months ago from ID does have the new style cover with the seal installed
