I'm new to Jeep ownership, have noticed how much the GDE hot/eco tune is recommended.

I'd like to know whether there is any advantage over this than a custom remap? I see there is a GDE Europe so can get the tuning kit to UK, but wondering whether it's better just to go up the road to my local diesel tuner and have them just re-map it.

I am sure the local guy knows his thing and all (we do a lot with diesel performance at my shop) GDE wrote the factory tunes and in on a whole different level with the kj crd, I exclusively use hid tunes at work for that reason on the Eco diesels and kj's. The problem I see with the local guy is he WILL NOT know the r428 as well, also GDE does every tune custom and he can add what you ask for, I like the exhaust brake and high idle, I always have my high idle kick off at 100 degrees. I also recommend having him do the Eco trans tune. Add a low stall converter and you will love it.

There are quite a few good DIY free ($0 cost) tunes available for download on this forum at:> viewtopic.php?f=98&t=78418
All that is required to reflash is an MPPS cable, which comes with the software, and a windows laptop computer if you want to DIY. The above link covers everything in detail. :D
Even if you don't want to tackle it yourself, your local diesel tuner may want to take a look at them since they are well proven and in use all over the US.

One thing I'll add to this (and this is not to detract from anything written above): contact GDE in advance of purchasing their tunes and make sure that they have ones available for non-North American-market CRDs.

There were differences in the mapping between the North American and rest-of-world models to account for differences in emissions standards, equipment, etc. Since getting this wrong could potentially brick the ECU and leave you with a non-running KJ, better safe than sorry.

Good advise, but in the case of the available downloadable free tunes on this forum one should certainly identify using the MPPS cable & software and perfectly match their ECM software ID number, like in my case was a 1037380811, before proceeding to reflash regardless of location.
But you are correct in stating that there may be some non US ECM software ID numbers we have not seen but I bet Yeti has or can at least modify them being he is in Italy....

GDE can certainly tune your vehicle in the UK. Our tunes are night and day better than the free tunes. Testing, validation and development ensure our tunes perform better, return better fuel economy and run cleaner.
