Where to begin?
Facts: 2005 Liberty CRD EGR removed and Sasquatch installed
glow plugs replaced at dealer.
Completely issue free then after 4K miles dash board lit up like a Christmas tree. Dealer said 9K to fix.
Liberty starts, runs and drives, random stalling at stop in gear. Pulled ECM sent off Friday to be repaired.
Codes: U0146, P0146, P1140, P0403

IF the ECM does not fix it my consideration is to strip the entire motor to bare bones and build a "farm" truck out of it or ORV.
Problem is I have nowhere to begin understanding building a work vehicle out of this vehicle? IE What/Where do I find out what can stay what can go, can this vehicle be customized to run and operate with out ECM and every sensor on with out shutting down the whole thing?

I am willing to accept any direction or advice to try to get this jeep operating. My thanks for you all!

The P0146 is the only odd ball there.
If it starts, runs, and drives then it’s not likely the the ECM.
You might need a better code scanner.
Given the symptoms, I suspect fuel system problem.
Maybe start by changing the fuel filter.
And have the battery tested.

This engine, with its electronic fuel injectors, absolutely needs all the sensors and ECM. There’s no way around that.

Have the battery AND alternator properly tested. Don't trust the guy behind the counter at any of the typical parts stores...take it to NAPA at the very least, but a capable shop with a good reputation would be better. This sounds like the battery could be at least ONE of the problems. By the way, come here before you go to the dealership. They're usually worse than the dude (or dudette) behind the counter at the parts store and almost certainly lazier since replacing larger and more expensive parts directly benefits them with almost no consequences. Very few people ever get into a legal battle with a dealership and win.

Report back after you've had that done.

Agree very unlikely the ECM and No you cannot run it without the ECM and sensors etc. It would be more likely to be a short or poor ground than the ECM. Next I would check all the grounds especially the one not in service manual in front and below battery tray. Even if battery strong etc there could be an intermittent internal short. If you have another battery that would fit try swapping it out for a while and see what happens. There are several things that could cause the symptoms that don't necessarily show a code such as the crank position sensor.

Myself and maybe others may have overlooked this. What do you mean by dashboard lit up . Just check engine light? TPS ABS etc When it stalls look quickly to see if the red dot skim light is on that may mean poor communication with skim system at that point. Also you might do the instrument cluster light check and see if gauges and lights all function correctly on that.

Sounds like you have a bad ground issue. Need to check all your grounds. A bad ground for the Power Distribution Panel can cause all kinds of weird issues including odd lights on the dash panel. You can view the Factory Service Manual for ground locations @ http://www.colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/

There is also a main computer ground by the turbo vacuum canister, it is under the 4 large connectors on the right hand side, I bought an 05 with lots of issues and it was just a loose ground there. They moved the ground late 05 so it doesn’t happen on 06’s

BTW guess its too late now but many of the places that say they can repair ECMs are more or less a scam and rarely ever repair anything.

Cardone does it as a last resort but my first choice is xemodex we are a vendor for them at work because they are a top Nichols company and they don’t skimp.

This is an 05 - could be the FCM, but the symptoms sound like a ground issue to me. The ECM is 100% NOT THE PROBLEM and the STEALERship quoting you 9k was just to make you go away. They don't have the first clue.

I have a parts 2005 CRD and I am pretty sure the FCM is good since it died from a dropped valve. if it is the problem I am planning on keeping it as a spare for my 3 other 2005 s but for the right price I would part with it.

Got the ECM back and plugged it in and many of the issues I had were in fact a part of the ECM. The only codes I have now are P0091 Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Control Circuit, P1140 (unkown what this is reference to) and of course P0403 Exhaust Gas Re-circulation Control Circuit (EGR).
Only dash lights I have now on are water in fuel and engine light.
Changing fuel filter tonight first.

The P1140 is in regard to the FCV being removed or malfunctioning. Many of the DIY tunes remove the FCV and EGR codes for people who had the unfortunate luck to have had the EGR system and FCV "fall off" of their CRD. The P0091 is likely an electrical problem that I would be unwise to help you diagnose. Let us know what changing the fuel filter does.

I would also like to see a description of what they repaired in the ECM other than Refurbish etc. Its entirely possible that they just cleaned pins etc. It would be almost unheard of for two different things to happen at exactly the same time to prevent the vehicle from running . It is possible that if there is a short in harness that it could have burnt a pin etc but would think it would do it again upon replacement.

Just moving some wires around or disconnecting and connecting the plug could easily make a difference also.

So I have narrowed down that I have a short in the FUEL QUANTITY SOLENOID. I have no idea what this looks like? I have the diagram of where it should be however I do not have a good picture of what it is suppose to look like.
P0091 is the code.
Any information on what it looks like for a CRD Liberty and or is it even a part to be ordered?
Thanks for any information.

Fuel Quality Solenoid (preferred name)
also sometimes called: Fuel Control Actuator or Fuel Pressure Regulator
OEM Mopar PN:5159962AA
Bosch PN: 0928400822
Location: on back of CP3 injection pump
https://www.idparts.com/high-pressure-f ... -4591.html

Regulator that bolts to the backside of the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) with three bolts.
Regulates the internal pressure of the fuel pump.

OK so how likely is this item to malfunction and or the likelihood of the Fuel Pressure Sensor to malfunction/stop? Is there a way to tell if the either have failed or are still working?
The code is deceiving due to it by the link above its a grounding issue, however dealer computer says its one of these two sensors?
Fuel Pressure Sensor
or
Fuel Pressure Regulator

I have scoured for a ground issue but cannot find and loose grounds.
