Hi all, my daily has been parked for a couple weeks because it killed the trans for a second time. The spin on filter spun off, and now it slips badly. It was driven about 5 miles after it started slipping to get it home. It lasted 14 months after a complete rebuild. I just bought another 05 crd limited with a good trans as a drivable parts vehicle to pull the trans, but it has the torque converter shudder... Sounds like your going over the rumble strips at anything over 45 or 50.

My question: can I use the new converter that was installed when I had the trans rebuilt? It never had any shudder even when towing. The fluid in the trans pan looks decent, but smells a little burnt, just a little bit of stuff on the magnet but no big pieces or anything. I'd like to avoid buying a new converter again if I could, I'm just worried about possible contaminants in it I guess.

I dont think anyone can answer that definitively. First if you are replacing the TC on the donor transmission you should go ahead and replace the front pump also and most add a transformer shift kit and possibly sonnet line pressure booster. If you are doing the removal and replacement yourself you could try it all you have to loose is 8 hours or more of work but if you are paying someone else to do it I definitely would not chance it. Personally I think it would probably be ok but thats just me , see what others have to say.

I will be doing the work with a buddy of mine. I'm planning on the transgo kit, and a magnefine inline filter. Anywhere to get the pump for less than $600? That kinda stings, could I inspect the pumps from the both trans and reuse the best one? The one in the dead trans was replaced when It was rebuilt. It does still drive, just slips over 35mph. Trying to get this thing going for as little as possible, but I do want it to last.

The newer TC will probably be ok, but I would get a pump and try to pump out as much of the burnt fluid that I could. Or better yet take it to a transmission shop where they have the facilities to flush out the TC. That burnt fluid will contaminate your new used tranny and certainly will not be good fro it....

Ok, thank you! That's what I was leaning towards, I'll take it to get it flushed for sure.

Do you think I might be able to reuse my newer pump too or is that asking for it?

I would talk to a transmission shop who has the experience to guide you.
I would think it could be reused as long as you renew any O rings or gaskets, but I would rely on an experienced transmission builder's advice in this matter.
Auto transmissions can be finicky things....so do it right the first time.

Agree with above and last I looked you could get a reman front pump from online chrysler parts cos for about $180 but thats been a while ago.
