Not sure about buying it. I make my own, which is a big reason why I use it. The oil company, Barkus Oil (IIRC) used to carry Blue Sun's bio; should be someone else selling it, they were a pretty big manufacture of it.

Another Lost member in Coal Creek Canyon??? I have been out of the loop for a while, but you can see in my sig I have a modded CRD. I also just failed emissions yesterday. Put in a paper air filter, and a dose of cetane booster and a couple of other tricks, and I blew 6% at 60 mph, 16% at 50 mph, and 22% at 40 mph. Contact me on FB messenger. Jerry Bourne. I'm near the Kwik Mart.

Forgot to mention that I blew over 40% at all speeds, and even over 50% at 40 mph on the first fail.

Finally got the Jeep to pass emissions after having failed emissions multiple times.
Went from about 60mph/38%, 50mph/42%, 40mph/51%, zero shift 1% opacity to 60mph/20%, 50mph/7%, 40mph/10%, zero shift 0% opacity.
What I did this time around:
1) Reflashed the ECM back to the original factory tune.
2) Changed out the Turbo Vacuum Modulator (the old one was occasionally buzzing)
3) Cleaned the MAF sensor, which was slightly dusty.

Since I had the Jeep pass in the past with the Eco FT tune, I doubt if the reflash was the fix.
I would bet that either/both the TVM or cleaning the MAF did the trick.
I had previously changed the oil and air filter, cam and crank sensors without much change to emissions. (60mph was +4%, 50mph was -17% and 40mph was -21% after that)
I also ran it pretty hard (for me) with a fair amount of Diesel Kleen in the fuel.

After passing, I reflashed the ECM back to the FT Eco Tune. The engine does seem to have less power and acceleration than before I changed out the TVM.
I never got any MAF, TVM, or other engine error codes.
I'm wondering if some of the 2.8l blown head gasket/valve problems might be related to engine sensor malfunctions that let the ECM overfuel or overboost without throwing a check engine light.
Seems like I should be manually monitoring the EGT's and boost.

Does anyone know if there is an electronic "gauge" that can monitor EGT's and boost? Something like the Edge Insight CS2?
I'd go with regular gauges, but there isn't much space to mount them anywhere useful.
Also, other than the DRBIII are there any scan tools that work well? I have a NT530 which only kind of sort of works sometimes and the GDE flash tool that sometimes returns a code.

Also, I have to give a nod to Lake Auto, as they retested the Jeep twice for free after it failed the first test. Apparently the 4th time was the charm.

This is one, there are others. :wink:

Hey @Steve777 any chance I could buy some of your 100% Bio-diesel as I really need to get this thing to pass emissions as my tags are now expired?

@blkkjltd - Glad you finally got yours to CRD pass. Unfortunately I did not buy the GDE flash tool when I bought my tune, so now I have the dilemma of tracking down a GDE programmer if I want to try the same as you did to get mine to pass. I wonder if there is anyone on the forum who would like to get rid of their GDE programmer so I have reflashing my ECU back to stock as an option.

For now though I'm am planning on trying to retest again this week as soon as my fuel tank is low enough to put in some 100% bio-diesel. I am also making the following changes as well in my attempt to get it to pass - swapping out the MAP, cleaning the MAF, swapping out the Turbo Vacuum Modulator (the old one was occasionally buzzing), getting a cheap single pleat air filter to let more air in and putting back my stock CRD airbox which will also allow for more airflow while sitting still while on the dyno as it has a larger air intake hole opening.

regarding passing emission test, not sure if it will apply to CRD. but back in the 90s when we had the emission testing in Canada every time my Jetta MK2 fails the emission I just put a new CAT and it passes the test no problem. by the way this was the gas engine so Im not sure if it will help in your case.

The 3rd time is the charm as I passed my CO Emissions today w/o any issues. I did try a few more things, but more than likely the pure 100% bio-diesel is what made the difference. The other things I did were I installed a cheap paper air filter, cleaned the MAF which did slightly increase my air flow numbers according to Torque Pro, swapped in my old MAP which had a different part number then what I got from ID Parts a year or so ago. The original MAP is p/n 0281002845 and the replacement that I got from ID Parts was 0281002437. Some consider them equivalent, but when I look up the specs on the two different Bosch part numbers I do see slightly different specs between them.

0281002845 => 11-307 kPa
0281002437 => 20-300 kPa

Here are my passing numbers:

60 MPH 13% Opacity
50 MPH 02% Opacity
40 MPH 20% Opacity
Zero Shift 00% Opacity

Congrats MtnClimber. Glad you got it to pass.

Just curious did you go back to Lake Arbor or someplace else for the test? Inquiring minds (and locals who will need their own tests soon) want to know.

I went back to Lake Arbor and got the retest for free.
