Word of Caution on Power Steering Hoses

Ok, after looking at the pictures and parts a few more times I finally noticed a difference. They both do have the same basic pieces, but if you look at the picture WW posted (05 crd), you'll see the 2 hard lines from the r&p body join on to the right hand side of the r&p (where the 4 ports are, the right hand 2). On the 06, they do not join in the same position, and the angle of that upward pointing part where the steering arm comes down to join (which has the 4 ports) is at a slightly different angle. So, long story short, the lines are different I think, dangit...
Sorry for the poor part terminology!

For what it's worth, I've bought plenty from RockAuto and the pictures don't always match the product. They can be close but not exact. Not sure why but with probably hundreds of thousands of parts they get mixed up or outdated?

As I understand it (read: could be completely wrong on this): Roackauto buys a lot of closeout / fire sale / going-out-of-business inventory. Not 100% of what they sell falls into these categories, but a measurable amount does. Because of this, they may be selling parts that have had their designs revised over time and won't necessarily update photos with ones that they've taken.

Example: a few months ago, I bought a water pump for one of our other vehicles. The car dates from the early '80s, and the pump that arrived had clearly been sitting on a shelf somewhere for years if not decades. It looked a little different to the one that was pictured (which in this case was OK by me, since I was aware of the changes), but was the correct fit. By the same token, I ordered a set of swaybar bushings and end links for the KJ a few weeks ago, and those turned up in what was clearly current-run brand-new Moog packaging.

And, yep, they've just flat-out sent the wrong item before. This wasn't as much of a problem when they still had support people who answered a phone, but since they transitioned all support over to email-only it's become much more of a fight.

I typically use Rockauto to look up part numbers.
Then use that info to search other vendors.
Pretty much comes down to: price vs how soon do it need it vs risk vs hassle of returns.

Well, I got the Jeep back from the shop. Great place, they did what I asked - took out the hose and had a new one made, but not the whole convoluted setup. They did a nice job, and it works. There is some vibration in the wheel, particularly at partial throttle under load, like climbing a long hill on the highway. So I suppose there was a reason for that strange original part. Not a big deal as far as I’m concerned, but not quite as nice as it was.

$900, a pretty incredible price for a PS pressure hose. But really not unfair, I suppose. They spent a lot of time on it. If I were doing it again, I think I would take it all apart myself, get the hose from the ‘05 and an ‘06 gas engine and see what fits.

If anybody on here is from outside North America, I’d be curious to know if the dealers still stock the part.

Had the same issues a couple months ago. I ordered the RockAuto part before pulling from my 05. Definitely the wrong part and I returned and let them know. Good return policy but you are still out some of the shipping. I ended up with a hydraulic shop making just the section that was leaking, with a compression fitting connecting to the hard tubing on either side of the flex tube. Worked well with no leaks. paid about $50

That is a better solution than mine. But my hard lines were all so rusty, I kind of felt I should replace the whole thing.

How long did it take you to get the old one out and the new one back in? It sure is buried in there.

My advice is to take what you've got to a hydraulics shop, and let them repair the hose. Parker outlets are pretty common and this work is easy for them. The nice thing is that when they're done you have a serviceable assembly.

But mine is shot around the accumulator thing that's welded / brazed all together.

I would just make up a simple new hose going from the pump to the rack. That’s what I’ve had now for almost a year, and it seems fine.

Yep, a hydraulics shop will cut the pipe at some interval, install some sort of fitting (usually a compression fitting) and then some sort of adapter to take you back out to rubber hose as appropriate.

same problem, looking for 52129342AF for 2007 KJ 2.8 CRD but it no longer exists worldwide ....
you say you have mounted a simple new hose, without the accumulator, do you have any photos of your setup ?

Hi Giacomo,

I don’t have any pictures, I had it done by a shop. But if I was doing it again, I’d do it myself. The actual repair is fairly easy it’s all the stuff that has to come off to get to it.

It is just a piece of hydraulic hose long enough to reach from the pump to the rack, with the proper fittings installed on the ends. It’s been almost 2 years now, so I call it a success.

If you do the job yourself, take pictures and notes. Maybe you or someone else wants to make up a few of them and sell them on here. It would be a great convenience and you could make a few bucks. I’m sure others will be needing this part.

so you can confirm that the workshop has fitted a new long hose without the accumulator ?
and there are no hydraulic pressure problems ?

Yes, just a simple hose, no accumulator. It has worked perfectly, really. At first I thought I was getting vibration under certain conditions, but it turned out I had a bad universal joint in the driveshaft. Replaced that and there is no vibration now.

I really am puzzled about that crazy, convoluted hose. I’m sure there is a reason for it, but I haven’t figured it out.

Any comments on longevity in just replacing the convoluted setup with a simple hose? Looks like my PS hose needs to be replaced.

Worst case there is some extra noise? Maybe doesn't perform door as smooth

I’ve got over two years on it now, and it’s just fine. Not too many miles, but works just like the original, as far as I can tell. I still don’t understand what that setup is all about.
