I have a new problem on my little 2005 CRD. I can't tell but there is a leak that was dripping down off the connection between what I'm assuming is the oil cooler. It's a square EGR cooler looking thing, on passenger side of engine below the metal cooling elbow which has one big port and I think 3 smaller ones? Anyways the small 4 inch or whatever hose between the elbow and the cooling device was leaking. I finally got the wretched hose off and it looks nearly brand new. I notice the nipple fitting into the elbow is just that, a fitting that appears to be removable? Could this be leaking? The hose looks perfect. If I replace it I will make it a little longer it was extremely difficult to get off.

Ideas? Is that an oil cooler? Thank you!

I've googled around can't find much similar info to this.

It is the small cooling hose between the oil cooler and the cooling elbow thing that goes to large hose and water pump etc.

This thing is cursed. I'm in Texas this weather somehow made this all go to hell. The bolts on the thermostat housing were totally loose..odd it showed up now when it was near zero.

The nipple on the oil cooler I noticed putting the new hose back on was smashed flat. Not sure if I did that or someone else. Hose looked pretty new the old one. Now it won't seal. I had a real air pressure system on there and it's leaking like a SIV

How hard is it to replace oil cooler? Looks like my only option, what a mess. Or just removing the water cooling from it which doesn't sound like a good idea I guess.

PS: that little 4-6inch hose was hell on earth. Took me an hour to get off with the clamps and 2-3 hrs to get back on. Horrible design. It's so short it fights you. The cold doesn't help I had to warm up with hair dryer etc to make it more flexible. My hands and arms and everything hurt from jacking with it, and now it leaks again. Fantastic! Sorry for venting

I don't understand why there is so little info about replacing oil cooler or any issues with it leaking

I found this, this may be in my future if I cannot fix the nipple, which seems likely.

Yup, you found my oil cooler replacement thread.
Hopefully you can fix yours. Finding a replacement part will not be easy.

At 15 PSI with worm clamp it had a drip every 5 seconds or so. I figured since this engine runs cooler 176 or whatever that it wouldn't have much pressure so I put back together and ran it. So far no drips. We will see if it holds. Beats the costly and painful repair. If I have to though I will later on

Thx :)

Do you still use an EGR? Do you even need it with an EGR delete?

Welcome to normal northeast winter wrenching. :-)r

Horrible cold.

I still have it but it’s tuned off. Oil cooler has what to do with egr ? If I could I Would just block off the water circuit. But then oil wouldn’t be as cool? Older engines don’t even have oil coolers but newer high output engines do. Not sure it’s really necessary I never tow with it or anything.

No one ever deletes or remove the water part ?

Actually it might be there to help heat the oil, as well as cool it? I know even the Sprinter V6 engines have a similar heat exchanger in the valley of the engine.

According to the student handbook. An oil cooler.

What student handbook is that? Very interesting! Thanks for info.

I still wonder if deleting the oil cooling would hurt anything. I doubt it as long as you aren't loading the engine heavily. But I suppose should keep it as designed.

The oil cooler is an integral part of the oil gallery. To delete it you would have to tap the block for elbow fittings or something and route the oil between the two ports in the block. You can't just block them off - that would block all oil flow.

I just meant deleting the water flow. Plugging water off so oil just flows through it unchanged. :)

You can get one here, I bought mine years ago. Probably on Ebay?

https://www.techauthority.com/en-us/pro ... -699-03111

Actaully the one I have has 81-699-03115 on the back cover.

Its not a repair manual, but it explains the engine and all of the parts that make it up.

Being that it serves and actual purpose to cool the oil, I would leave it, or replace it. I would not chance it myself.

X2
I strongly second that. It plays a very important function.

I agree. I drove it a lot so far no leaks with the strong tight worm clamp. I’ll keep eye on it.
