You likely caused the the CEL light during your work, and they go away if there isn't a fault present in 10 hot cold cycles or something similar. So you probably dont need a scanner. They can really save the day on a diesel though, like when you have an injector fault, might save you from running it and chance burning a hole through a piston, but the smoke can tell you to shut it down also...
