Thank you both.

No, this doesn't happen shortly after starting but at least several minutes and a few miles later...minimum.

crank sensor looks to be the culprit...and cheapest start. I'll try there first.

Will report back.

Replace the fuel filter also.
Its a lot easier than the crank sensor.

Replaced both, now my check engine light is on.

Seems to run fine though. I'll drive it for a few days locally and we'll see what happens.

Do I need to buy a scanner? Any recommendations?

Check engine light went off on it's own when I fired it up this morning.

I love mysteries.....not.

I'll report back if things change with the repairs. Thank you all again for your help and advice.

You likely caused the the CEL light during your work, and they go away if there isn't a fault present in 10 hot cold cycles or something similar. So you probably dont need a scanner. They can really save the day on a diesel though, like when you have an injector fault, might save you from running it and chance burning a hole through a piston, but the smoke can tell you to shut it down also...

I know I'm a little late to the thread, but I just wanted to report back and confirm that the crank position sensor completely resolved the issue for me. I was experiencing the exact same issues as stevegsmith and thought it was air in fuel since air came out when i bled the fuel. I decided to add the fuel lift pump and that didn't help the stalling issue at all (I'm still glad i added it though since it should help in cold-start scenarios and reduce the air in the line). After replacing the crank position sensor it hasn't stalled yet.

I ended up getting the sensor from autozone: https://www.autozone.com/engine-managem ... 793836_0_0

Although i was tempted to try the much cheaper one from amazon: https://www.amazon.com/MOTISEN-5066882A ... 087&sr=8-3

Since i was in a bit of a rush to get it running sooner rather than later, i opted for the autozone delivery since they could get it next-day.

Crank shaft position sensor. Sounds just like mine did. Mine shut down every time it got warm.
