I have picked up a donor 2005 with high miles. Has a couple codes, turbo vac solenoid, glow plug #3. I have the solenoid ordered, and the glow plug I will take care of when I pull the motor. I plan on taking off the head at that time anyway.
Right now I am making it run without all the extras I won't need. ABS, BCM and all the associated wiring... While it is still in the donor vehicle.

I do have some questions on the transmission. They are cheap for used ones.. Is is better to buy a used one for a Durango, or pickup rather than putting in a front pump, suncoast converter and a transgo shift kit?

Thanks in advance for the help and comments.

This morning I unplugged the BCM and ABS modules to see what codes would come up, or if it would even run. It seems the motor and trans worked just fine. When I scanned the whole system it just said No Communication with the BCM and ABS module. I was not sure it would be that simple, but I am glad it was. I do have the Skim hooked up off to the side with the chip key taped to it.

From what I can see, there is only 3 fuses in the cab fuse box that I need to set up in another fuse panel to make the motor/trans into a stand alone harness. Tomorrow I will start cutting the harness apart to try to confirm that.

Curious why you picked this motor to swap into the FJ? Seems like there would be better options, no?

I am all ears.

What do you think would be a better option?

I can change my mind anytime. Its not in yet. lol. I was thinking on this one for a few reasons. Its attached to a factory automatic. Self contained wiring harness, the motor and trans communicate, etc. As far as I can tell all the hard parts are readily available. Sleeves, pistons, cams. It's the same size and power as the new Cummins. Without the 10K price tag and you get a ready mounted transmission with this swap. Once you change out the thermostat housing, remove the emissions, rebuild the head, its pretty much bullet proof for years. I did pick up spare computers. I did find them cheap from salvage yards not knowing what they were(had them listed wrong) But our winter daily is an 05 and it hasn't needed one yet...

In our daily I just have the GDE eco tune and its got plenty of power.

Sure, there are probably a number of good choices, but I see nothing wrong with the Jeep CRD and its 545RFE automatic. You will definitely want to upgrade the stock torque converter to the euro model at least, or better. Looks like a great project, particularly if you go with an electric fan with an override switch for those water crossings.

Thanks. I do have some questions on the transmission???

Is it better to buy a newer used unit, since it would have the newer front pump style?

And do you have to replace the TC on the newer units? Or are the newer hemi units strong enough?

Justifying to figure out if the used one is better or if I should put a front pump, TC, and a shift kit in the one I have???

I have VW 1.9 ALH in the 40 now. I do have it tuned up pretty good. Probably 180hp.. It's mounted to a Jeep NV3550 transmission, so the 545 would mount to the adapters I have now on the transfer case. We have put about 8k miles on the swap so far. Love driving the 40, but I can't keep the egts down in the tdi..I think it's just working too hard pushing the brick of a 40..

Hence the upgrade..

Didn't have any particular engine in mind, just seems like a used Cummins 4BT is a popular choice for diesel conversions but may be a tad on the heavy size?

Since you've made all the improvements and upgrades already, plus have a spare computer then you may be golden once you upgrade the trans. I guess my initial questioning pertained to the weaknesses, pricey/limited parts - but you have that figured out or addressed.

What year FJ? Is the front limiting on the size of your intercooler I assume?

Sorry I can't help with the tranny questions, not had to deal with that yet.

Its a 1976 fj40.

I actually did a 4BT back in about 2004. I did that in an fj60. It is and was a very heavy motor. I didn't like it. Made a lot of noise and vibration and not an over abundance of power. lol. I took the 4BT out and put in an Isuzu 4BDT2 and while I was changing it out, I had to put in sleeve/piston sets. I also balanced them. That Isuzu, being the same C.I. as the Cummins made way more usable power. And sooooo much smoother.

I wondered the same thing on the intercooler. But now I have a temp sensor on my Intake air temp. I run about 2 degrees F over ambient temp. With that, I think the intercooler is about as efficient as a person can get...

Here is a pic of the 40 from a couple weeks ago. Its at a rest area on a little 2 lane on the MN/SD border.

I can't see it either - but am anxiously waiting...

I've heard the 4BT vibrated a lot and the power to weight ratio was a little off.

Was the Isuzu diesel a Perkins?

I am working on learning how to post pics.. I like pics, so I will get it figured out.

No, the Isuzu was there own diesel. It was a 3.9L just like the Cummins. But no vibration and waaaaay quieter and a lot better power to weight ratio. It was so far detuned from the factory that a turbo change woke it right up.

Simplest upgrade would be 12HT (& 5 speed gearbox) - bolt in replacement other than fuel lines & exhaust
With a tickle they will make reasonable power as 4.0L straight six turbo diesel on low boost (6PSI) - they will run up to 12PSI before the intake starts to become an issue.

After that look for a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT (4.2L straight six - auto or manual) - they will run up to 18-20 PSI with a 3.0 Supra OEM turbo - need engine mount changes

Beyond that 1HDFTE (4.2 24 valve straight 6) & 5 speed (auto or manual) start out at 132-151KW 430nm out of the factory (but will run 50% more with aftermarket turbo & a tune) - this ones electronic so you need wiring & pedal. Might break the Cherokee diffs / CV's though if you tune it up a bit.

Dont bother with 2H or 1HZ motors (both NA)

Really nice looking FJ!!!
Looks more like a 45 from that angle.
You do all the work yourself? Didn't they come out with a diesel originally?
