Escaped Prescott after fighting issues with motorhome and Jeep for FIVE months, with even two more MH problems on the road, headed to Oregon. Motorhome not strong enough to tow jeep, chasing instead.
Yesterday afternoon, I'm driving the jeep, humming down road 45 miles south of Alturas on the 395, temps good, but suddenly heard one loud POP from the engine with complete loss of power, no acceleration at all. Pulled over to side of road, coasted to stop. Felt like I should turn engine off to halt possible damage. Let it sit for a minute. Tried to turn it over, starter works but the crank is weird, like no compression? Uh oh.
Got my partner to notice I wasn't behind him and come back with the cats and the MH. Thank the universe we had cell service and a good wide shoulder. Same deal every time we tried to start it. Serpentine was intact. Worried it's the way overdue timing belt - had already ordered all the parts from ID Parts and had sent to our mechanic in Centralia WA.
Called AAA, then all the shops on 150 mile radius. Nobody could work on it for WEEKS, many wouldn't touch it anyway, and most said they wouldn't use our parts even if they did.
Finally found a shop that said they would look at it ASAP in the city of Mt Shasta. Had it towed there after they closed. Found last spot available in a sweet RV Park in McCloud, after calling 10 other parks, all full.
Talked to mechanic this afternoon. Says he can't get fuel to the cup. Told me the timing belt is good, though he hadn't removed the cover. He's convinced the Injection Pump is the problem, and says he doesn't have the proper tools, won't work on it any further. He's urging me to take it to Redding dealership. I do NOT want to do this.
This doesn't seem right to me. I know IP problems are rare for us, and that pop makes me suspicious. I asked him to confirm that the timing belt is good, he reluctantly said he'd pull the cover and check on Monday. He doesn't seem like he understands this engine, nor care to.
If it WAS the timing belt, our Centralia mechanic is willing to overnight the parts. But I don't think this guy has a clue.
Anyone know a mechanic anywhere in this area who would go through the proper diagnostic steps and/or will be able to do the timing belt? Or anyone in the area on this board who would be willing to take a look at it just to see what it might be? We can rent a U-Haul truck in Mt Shasta and get it wherever, if not tooooo far.
If we can't find anyone here, we could do that to get it to Centralia, but that is $$$ and I worry it could be some stupid small problem, or just a whole bunch more money on top of cost of repair.
