I am trying to find a place to mount a CB radio antenna. I want it to be temporary so i thinking about the spare tire or behind the tail light. I would like to see pics if anyone had done this.

If you want temporary, you should go with a magnetic mount. If what you're looking for is more of a long-term but removable or non-damaging, I agree with the spare tire or tire carrier mounts. Or you can go with the mount I got, which is a front of the hood mount. It is long term, but easily removable. Details here:

Thats another option I was going to do. Which brand did you use? Can you post up some pictures? and is there any hole drilling?

I'm running a Firestik MK-204 doorjamb mount. 4 holes must be drilled, but they're small and are really easy since it's just thin sheetmetal. I don't have a quick disconnect personally, but since I've got a spring, I can easily unscrew the antenna from the spring, leaving the spring on the mount.

The mount, on Gringo Loco's rig:

If you're looking for good prices on this stuff check out the Troy's Toys webpage, or look in your yellow pages for a CB shop. I've found that for everything but the radio itself, local shops will have lower prices.

Did you just drill the holes and screw in or did you use any sort of threadlock or something when you mounted that to the door jam?? I'm looking at doing the same sort of setup...or mounting it to my roof basket...I saw a picture around here somewhere of someone having there's mounted horizontally next to their roof basket or something like that but haven't been able to find it since...anyone know who or where I could find that??

If you mount it to the roof basket just make sure that the antenna's well grounded, as your roof basket probably isn't. If you mounted it horizontal to the roof basket I don't think you'd get a very good ground plane and your antenna would be polarized 90 degrees to everyone else's, as a result you wouldn't get as much range as you would with a vertically mounted antenna.

I just tightened them in, but be careful not to overtighten them and mess up the threads or open the hole too much. It holds really well.

Check around the CB section for info on the roof mount, I can't remember the guy's username. There are several threads about antenna mounts, you should be able to dig something up.

Are you referring to mine? It's mounted on a fold-down bracket, so I just pop it up when needed. No drilling required. :)

That is exactly the one I was referring to...what antenna are you using and did you fab that mounting bracket or were you lucky and found something that worked? Did you get that fold down bracket with the antenna or from an antenna dealer? Please inform me...

Here's the setup:

Wilson 2' Silverload antenna
Stainless steel light-duty spring
EZ-Over fold-down antenna mount (modified) (details)
Mirror mount (details)

The EZ Over had to have the top part of the sliding sleeve cut off as it wasn't wide enough to slide over the spring.
I grounded it inside the factory rail mount (the side just pops off) and ran the coax inside there and out through the front, down the weatherstripping onto the windshield and down into the hood.

The antenna lays along the upper rail of my rack and I have a strip of industrial velcro to tie the other end in place when it's down.

Yes I thought your antenna was a 2'...I just recently bought a 4' Firestik off of a fellow lost member and was looking for your setup to see how I could work it....you think having a 4' antenna would just look silly in a setup like yours...i got a gut feeling it might...

Yup. I swapped my 4' Firestik for the Wilson for that reason, and the fact that at 10'+ I'd be hitting every branch on the trail, and it wouldn't fit inside the rack when folded. :)

I considered doing that type of a mount as well, but I was going to use this one:

is there any issue tuning this setup for SWR? does a ground strap from the mount to the body suffice?

I can't remember the exact SWR I got, but it was well within tolerance - better than my previous setup on the spare wheel mount. I haven't used it in a while, and I have had my windshield replaced since, so I'm probably going to check all the cables and retune it this week if it warms up a bit. I'll let you know the SWR I get.

If you look at the top pic you can see the ground strap going into the factory rails. I popped off that section of plastic, dremelled out some of the inside to make room for the coax and ground, and attached the ground to a screw in there. I only grounded from the mount - there's a ground strap on the antenna itself but I didn't need to use that.
