I need to replace the fan relay and connector harness on a 2002 Liberty Sport.
I have the DVDROM service manual, but all it say on the fan relay is;

This relay is located on the left wheelhouse in the engine compartment.

It doesn't say how to get to it or change it.
Does anyone have any insight as to how I should go about changing it?

The location sounds a lot like the fuse block that's right in front of the battery in the engine compartment. If you pop that fuse block open I believe there are relays in there.

I don't think it's that easy. It's a 5 hour estimated shop time for the fix.
I can't see a dealer charging $300 in labor to pop open the fuse box.

I'd try the local library to see if they have a Chilton's manual for the liberty, or similar. My library stays preety up to date on them.

Here's the one for 2002-2004. Even if your model is newer, there's a chance this procedure is the same:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/156392 ... F8&s=books

And here is the Hayne's version:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/156392 ... F8&s=books

Copy down the ISBN and call your library.

Im purty sure the replay for the high and low fan IS in that fuse block. Ive looked it at a bunch of times. I would guess the reason its 5 hours is for the harness. It may be alittle tricky or something. Why are you replacing the harness anyway? Been going through to much mud or something?

Jeepjeepster is correct, I just checked and assuming you're talking about the radiator fan relay, the RAD FAN LOW and RAD FAN HI relays are both in that fuse block by the battery.

The relay blew and fried the harness connector. The dealer wanted $359 to fix it, so I just bought the relay and harness connector from them for $60 and said I'll fix it myself.

I just can't belive that it can be as easy as opening the fuse box, there must be more to it for them to want $300 to fix it.

pixeldzn,
I would go down to the library, but the closest one is about 50 miles away.

I'm going to go look at it and see if I can figure this out.

Thanks for the help so far.

Essentially you'll want to remove the fuse block, remove the relay that is affected, and then remove the receptacle for the affected relay and replace it with the new receptacle/harness you bought.

Nope no Rad Fan Relay in my fuse box.

Image

I talked to one of the mechanics at the dealership, he said you have just about take the front end apart. He said the relay is behind the passenger side headlight in the wheel well under the air filter box, and all kinds of stuff has to come off to get to the relay.
I guess I'm going to have to find a shop manual somewhere.

I don't think we've hit the answer yet...

I have replaced the radiator fan relay twice on my '02..

It is on the left wheelhouse like the original post said.

In my case also, the connector is damaged. I don't know which damaged which -- the chicken or the egg.

In June, the fan stopped working after about ayear with replacement relay #1 in there, and I purchased replacement relay #2. (About $50)

Soon, relay #2 quit, and I replaced #1 back in there, and it worked. I believe the bigger problem is the connector.

NOW, #1 is still in there, and I bent the tab on it slightly to make better contact in the damaged connector. So far, it has not failed again yet.

You say you bought the relay and "connector harness" ? What does that look like? I thought it was only part of a large wire harness that runs all around the engine compartment. If they supplied you a small replacement connector for it that splices in, can you show a picture of it ?

I can try to post some pictures of mine, but I won't have access to the Jeep today.

I also wired up a switch under the hood to hot-wire the fan from the battery, using a relay and two fuses -- in case it fails in traffic.

Also-- do you have the mechanical radiator fan ? I do not. I think access would be worse if you do. Reaching it on mine is not too bad.

That's funny, in my 05 I have the RAD FAN HI and RAD FAN LOW relays in those blank spots under the BLOWER MOTOR and ASD relays respectively.

Now were gettin' close.
I don't have the conector yet, I had to order it and will get it Friday. I will get a picture of it. If you have a chance to get a picture of where the relay is please email it to me.

Thanks

Here is a picture of the location of the fan relay. This picture is taken from the right front corner, past the front of the engine to the left wheelhouse, below the battery and fuse block. The yellow and red wires are the lines running to my underhood switch.

Next picture is not too good. Close-up the relay. Too dark tonight to focus well -- or fool around much to get a better picture...

Here is a picture of the new Fan Relay part number 56041891AD, and the relay connector part number 05083232. The connection comes with about 18 inches of splice wire, wire crimpers, and heat shrink tube, to splice it into the wire harness.
