Well yeah, but it is worth noting that "some of the gauges" is pretty narrow.

I just picked one up and on the way home it seemed to work great. I will have to play with it more and let you know the limitations.

It seems to report most of the stuff. But if you unplug it while the engine is running it "loses" the information and won't start reporting it again until you shut off the motor and restart.

If it looks like it is not showing enough data, I will return it - there is a 30 day unconditional satisfaction guarantee.. :)

Well, I am not sure why the disclaimer, but out of the list of gauges -

These work on my CRD:
  • Fahrenheit Intake Air Temp (FIA)
  • Celsius Intake Air Temp (CIA)
  • Fahrenheit Water Temp (FWT)
  • Celsius Water Temp (CWT)
  • Gallons Per Hour (GPH)
  • Litres Per Hour (LPH)
  • Engine Loading (LOD)
  • Miles Per Gallon (MPG)
  • Kilometers per Gallon (KPG)
  • Miles Per Litre (MPL)
  • Litres Per 100 Kilometers (LHK)
  • Miles Per Hour (MPH)
  • Kilometers Per Hour (KPH)
  • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP)
  • Throttle Position Setting (TPS)
  • Battery Voltage (VLT)

These do NOT work on my CRD:
  • Fuel Pressure (FPR)
  • Ignition Timing (IGN)

These do not even show up when scrolling through the gauges:
  • Fuel System Loop Status (CLSD LP) (OPEN LP)


It appears to me that all of the "trip" functions are working as well. I have max values, averages, for today - this tank - total, etc etc etc. Everything in trips seems to work.

Reading and clearing codes works as advertised.

You can adjust the speed reading based on gearing or tire size changes - or if you have a GPS you can use it to set accuracy.

You can improve the mileage accuracy by inputting data when you fill up the tank. I have obviously not had it long enough to speak to this functionality.

It comes with velcro mounting tape, and I mounted it in front of the almost useless cubby by the cigarette lighter. I will probably move it left to better accommodate using the 12 volt plug (lighter) for gadget juice.

I really like the size of this thing. I just wish it told you more info-- like all the info that the DC scanners show. I would really like to know the trans temperature and turbo boost without having to run more wires and install more sensors. If the CRD has a Turbine inlet or outlet temp sensor that feeds the computer-- I would really like to know that value.

I know many have installed gauges for all this, but it just seems ashame to go and run another wire and put another sensor in for something that is already known to the computer. Plus, I don't like the idea of replacing my door shiz-handle with guage pods, as I can see a use for it if I ever do lift it. I have toyed with the idea of buying a dead EVIC on ebay and using it as a mockup to injection mold something to hold guages up at the top of the vehicle, instead of holding them in the handle-- but alas, I am not motived enough yet. Something like this would change my mind-- it is the bomb because you get gauges for anything it knows about and you get a code reader-- all at once.

Are there any other products out there that would allow us to mount the ODBII scanner in the vehicle permanently and use the scanner as a guage? I looked at Napa and Pep Boys and saw nothing but huge yellow cludgy scanners... I can't believe this is the only one out there like this. I suppose Banks/Billy Dog/Edge may have something, but I wonder if I would have to buy their chip to work with it... or a PDA running windoze or some other crap they want to sell me.

It could be too early to tell exactly, but it could be because it looks like it may "lock up" sort of after a period of use.

The RPM gauge stays going but some of the others (like MPG and MPH) seem to occasionally "stick".

I will follow it closely...

I used my SG for a year in the CRD. Sometimes it would work for hours, sometimes it would quit after 5 minutes. I could never figure out what triggered the cessation of data collection . When it was on the Gauge page, it would continue to display the last values collected but nothing changed except RPM and throttle position. If I switched to the Trip page then back to the Gauge page, the values would be blank. The trip page kept recording MPG and miles based on the last value it had. I could be sitting at a stop light and it would think I was still going 55.

My Carchip does the same thing. Just stops recording data. The SG and Carchip work 100% in my Chevy. If your SG stays working all the time, that is awesome.

The SG is still useful at startup to check and clear codes. While it is working, you can read sensor readings. It will not record Trip functions correctly and should not be relied on for things like Miles to Empty.

I changed the "rate" (refresh rate) to "slow" and it seems to help.

If I set the refresh rate to "Fast", or if I change "gauges" too fast - it stops reading the data.

So far so good on "slow".

It must be the CRD either stops responding or gets confused. Which would make sense since most of the data from the CRD confuses many scanners.

I read somewhere that our CRD plays tricks with the CAN bus, such that two different devices act as "master" (normally not cool) and they (Dodge) manage it by multiplexing the bus somehow. One troublesome side effect is that it tended to confuse aftermarket devices... that info may be relevant to what you're experiencing here.
