Getting rid of the stock Goodyears...finally

24,000 miles and at least 3 flats. Sold the used 5 for $80.00 and bought 5 new Hercules Terra Trac AT 235/75/16s for $550.00 ($470.00 net )(mounted/balanced/tax/ect.). They also come with a road hazzard warranty...free replacement first 10,000 miles if they can't be fixed...prorated after that. 50,000 miles/500AB rating. I am going to mount them up Monday and see if I have any fitment problems...29.82" tall. I think they will be fine on road and I will add a lift in a month or two...OME 2" from AllJs.

The other 235/75/16 AT that I looked at seriopusly was the Toyo Open Country AT:

Do they come in 235/65/17?

I think my 245/70 Open Country's are slightly taller although when we sat them side by side at the tire shop there was no noticeable difference from the OEM's. Despite the more agressive tread on the Open Countries they ride quieter. Be interesting to see how the Hercules do and sound.

Buddy of mine is running the Hercules ATs on the Cherokee on road and the new MTs off road. He loves them both, he also says the MTs are some of the quietest, but best off road MTs he's ever seen, seem to hook up well everywhere.

What is the disadvantage of ATs on road as opposed to All Weathers?

AW's usually have a more shallow tread depth...whereas...AT's have a deeper tread depth. The Hercules ATs have great siping (small cuts) that give excellent wet weather grip. The AW's are not really OffRoad" tires is any way...AT's are All Weather and OffRoad capable.

Doesn't shallow tread depth mean better traction on highway on high speeds? That's one reason I couldn't decide on getting A/T tires such as Pirelli Scorpions. I do mostly highway,

Yes and No. Deeper tire tread will fight hydroplaning better than a shallow tread depth. A shallow tread depth will dissapate heat better than full tread depth. This is why SCCA racers "shave" tires down to 2/32's or so for racing. It also stops "tread squib"...meaning taller tread block can flex and cause some side to side motion. That is more important at the "edge" of performance at high speeds and higher G force cornering. A good AT with a stiffer sidewall will usually keep that from affecting your driving. Everything is a compromise...you just have to figure out what is more important for your driving style and needs.

That's what I am looking for. We get nasty winters here in NY, even though I am in the city, most of the side roads are not plowed and we end up in snow/slush/wet mix in most of the winter. So that's the biggest reason why I didn't end up getting AW tires such as Fortera Silent Armors, as I think they will give me about the same performance as what I have now (Wrangler HP). But I am determined to swap them before end of this summer, because they have been performing worse and worse by each winter.. And I wanted something that won't compromise cornering on highway since I like to drive a bit on the fast side, yet I want to have better performance on snow/rain.

Anyway, I don't want to hijack your thread as we already have enough of these topics.

Well, the taller Hercules 235/75/16 Terra Trac AT fits the CRD without any contact with the pinch weld or front air dam/facia. OffRoad with full flex?...not sure yet. Honestly, this is the size tire that should have come on the CRD from the get go.

The ride is MUCH SMOOTHER but that is normal with new tread compared to worn tread. So far, I don't notice any extra road noise...too soon to tell right now. I also think the 5% circumference difference will correct the speedo error...and my warranty will last a bit longer :wink:

EDIT: Speedo is off 5%...Speedo indicates 50mpg...true speed via GPS 48
Odometer off 6%...Odometer indicates 10 miles...GPS is 10.6

So speedo is closer to true speed (used to be 7% off) and odometer is now 6% off.

I was traveling on a logging road in very rural BC yesterday, at a good clip mind you, and I got a flat....really flat....ho boy in 8 seconds flat. Good news is that the tire pressure warning thingy works really well. As soon as the puncture occurred I was notified. I have opted for the Yokohama Geolander and hope to all that is holy that I will not get a flat with them. They will be installed tomorrow. BTW I have never had a set of tires wear as fast as the crapyears...40000km and they are out of round and weak in the knees.

Another satisfied Goodyear customer!! I was horrified to learn they actually sell these tires. You would have to pay me to run them again.

I got 52K from the fatory tires. Being replaced with Goodyear Fortera triple treads. In my opinion they are the best!

I've got 31,500 on the stockers. I live in AZ where it's mostly dry (understatement) and the stockers do ok here. I've had to drive with the stockers in snow, slush, and rain when I had a gasser and lived in ND. They were the worst tires I've ever had. If I didn't live somewhere as dry as AZ I'd have dumped them long ago.

Darby, Did you have any rubbing with the 235/75/16 before you got your lift? I have a 2006 CRD that is ready for a set and I'm looking at the Nokian Vatiiva A/Ts in that size. I'm not too worried about the street, but what about off road?

No rubbing and no cutting...evfen flexed on a ramp to double check. The only contact could come from the sway bar at full lock just like with 245/70/16s...but not a problem...just release a micro turn and you are good.
