I have been lurking the sight for about a week, learning all I can about the KJ. Let me explain why...

It all started when I decided I wanted to get a Wrangler. I took the wife to the dealership, and started looking around. I was upside down on my trade, and there were no rebates on the wraglers to help off set it. So the salesman suggested a Liberty. I was immeadiatly turned off. But I said what the heck, I will waist his time and let him try to sell it to me. We took it on the test course, (which we all know isn't real off roading, all the rocks are cemented in place, and the water is clean...) I wasa mildly impressed. The wife loved it. It took the salesman, manager and my wife 4 hours to convince me to buy the 07 Liberty Limited.

I just recently moved back to Colorado, and haven't been back to alot of my old haunts, so I figured what better way to break in the Jeep and get a feel for it, than a trip up Rampart Range road. We made it to the dedication marker near the top, and parked to take some picts.

When we got back in, the check engine light came on. I was like WTF!!! it is a brand new vehicle, and it broke with 48 miles on the odometer????? I limped it back home, I could tell something was wrong with the tranny. It started from a stop real sluggish, and would run the RPMs up high and would not shift. It made for a long trip home down HWY 24 from Woodland Park. I searched the web trying to figure out what happend, and how to pull the codes from the Libby. Nothing worked. (thats how I found this place)

The next day when the dealership opened I was beating on their door. And let me tell you I was mad. I unloaded both barrels on them, telling them to take their piece of junk back, I would take my business else where. The manager took it for a test drive and came back and said "he didn't think there was anything wrong, and did you know the check engine light was on?" What an idiot, I "reloaded" and let him have some more. They ran the Libby into the service dept. and about an hour later, another manager came out and said the service dept had it fixed, and he wanted them to explain what happened to it. He also stated that one of the owners was involved now (I didn't believe him). So we talked to the technician, and he said the "transmission speed sending sensor wires came disconnected". He checked them and plugged them back in and made double sure they clipped and everything is fine. He then explained about "limp mode", how the diagnostic system locks the car into 2nd gear when it finds a problem, just enough to "limp" home. I read the entire owners manual and there was not a mention of "limp mode". So that was good info to have. I took it on a quick test drive, and went to a mud hole I knew of close by.

Everything seemed to be working fine. I took it home and went back to work. After work, I got the wife and kids to see if I could break the Jeep again. This time we headed up Bear Trap road to Gold Camp road. The Libby seemed to be enjoying the beating. I couldn't believe how well she was handeling. So I started hitting some of the side trails. We took trail 379 and found some good camping spots, and really learned that a Liberty dosn't get enough credit as an off-road vehicle.

I know in those picts it is hard to see, but when I stopped I thought the rear tire was off the ground. As you can see I was mistaken, by a long shot. The Libby has impressed me, and then some. I think for a family off roader and daily driver this is a perfect vehicle. I am glad I got this over a Wrangler.

I do plan on some mods like a lift, bigger tires, roof rack, light bar, ARB bumper with winch...all in time.

Welcome!

Unfortunatly sometimes small things like a connector being loose does happen on new vehicles, glad it got fixed and you are enjoying the KJ.So your in CO,should check out the L.O.S.T. Rockies forum,we do runs about every 2 weeks,1 stocker friendly, and 1 not so stocker freindly. You are more than welcome to come along on the stocker runs and ride on the nastier trails to show what a KJ can do with a few mods.

First on your list should be tow points, then skid plates/rock rails(a must for here in CO).Then after you are protected then you can get a lift and wheels/tires.

Kinda funny that your the first one to reply...I have been useing your KJ as a template for what I want mine to be like. I have been checking out tow hooks, and am kinda shocked at how expensive they are. But since I am going to replace the bumber, I have been thinking of holding off till then. I have read the Rockies boards, and read about the runs. I might do some later, but we are still getting settled in.

Welcome to the L.O.S.T.

I thought the exact thing about the Liberty when I first saw it. Now I'm enjoying it. But I will say this I've thought of trading it for a 4DR Wrangler.

Some things never change. :)

Since the KJ is technically a MOPAR now that it is part of the Chrysler family, take a look at the old Ramcharger. There was a wire that came down and hooked to the transmission. I can't recall what it was for. But, when you happened to wheel over brush, the branches would pull the wire loose and you were not going anywhere until you plugged it back in.

Before y'all start in on me; no, I don't make a habit of driving over vegitation. But, in my line of work (now retired) you had to go where the "customer" (polite term) went. That frequently meant traveling where there was no established trail.

On another note; we felt the same way, regarding trailworthyness, when the Cherokee came out. But, after we learned to compensate for the lack of ground clearance (picking a different line) we found that there weren't too many places we couldn't go. As another forum member said, with the full size rigs like the Blazers, Ramchargers and Broncos you use brute force and horsepower to clear obstacles. With the KJ (or a stock Cherokee) you use finesse. It's more like riding a Trials bike over a motocross bike.

Having owned and/or driven most types of fwd vehicle made over the last 30 years, I'm real impressed with the KJ. I honestly never thought I'd see this level of comfort in fourwheeling. If getting out and exploring is your thing, the KJ is the right vehicle.

Welcome to the pack!

Welcome to the forum!

I had just wrecked my Exploder, and my buddy (salesman at the Chrysler dealership where I worked) tried to goad me into a new-to-me (at the time 3 years old) Liberty. My Exploder was a pavement pounder, but by god I wouldn't buy a Liberty because if I'm gonna buy a Jeep it's gonna be one that can go OFF ROAD!

Well, we just happened to have this nice blue one that just got traded in on an '06 Commander...which promptly got test driven at the river bottoms and a few other places...

40,000 miles later...I'm still super happy with it, and I'm sure you will be with yours, too. I've beaten the hell out of this thing and it's broken less than my CJ-7 (of course unlike my CJ-7, the KJ is still being paid for and driven as such:P)

I'm a Newby myself just found out about L.O.S.T. about 4 weeks ago. I don't know what part of Colorado your in I'm in Lakewood just west of Denver if your near by I can help with an independent Jeep, Chrysler, Dodge repair shop he ain't cheap, but he is honest (rare comodity in any automotive shop) . If he can get you by for a little while till you can afford the expensive repair he will go out of his way to help you. I've used him for years he did wonders with my '95 dodge Dakota 4x4 5.2L , kept me going long after the truck should of had burial flowers placed on it's gravel. Then when I bought my '02 sport he went out of his way to make it both on and off road ready. A good mechanic is like a mans dream come true " A 23 year old Playboy centerfold nymphomaniac who owns a licquor store". It don't get any better then that. If you are in need I am a Life Time AMSOIL dealer and will give you all your needs at my cost just go to AMSOIL.com grocery shop then conntact me and I'll give you my price then it's up to you no pressure I just want to help my KJ bretheren.

LEAD :) FOLLOW :P or GET OUT OF MY WAY   8) :-)r :-)r :-)r

Don't feel bad. My new 07 had a "small" issue too the first day I owned it -- the shift cable came partially disconnected. I tried to pull out of my sub (onto a fairly busy street) and it went into Neutral. Luckily I then figured out that the new change to the Liberty for 07 was that Neutral was Reverse, Drive was Neutral, And 2nd was OD.

10 mins for them to reattach and secure the shift cable and I was golden.
