It is with a heavy heart that we send this email out to all members of our Terra Jeep Club family.

Saturday August 11th, long time Terra Jeep Club member and Rock Pirate Jeep Club co-founder Bryan Cohen was killed in an auto accident.

Bryan, his close friend Mike, and their fathers were returning from a day of wheeling at Badlands Off-road Park in Attica Indiana. Approximately 12 miles north of Attica on Route 41, Bryans’ Jeep experienced a sudden and severe mechanical failure which resulted in the Jeep rolling several times.

Bryan was air lifted to a hospital in Champaign-Urbana where he passed away and his father, who was also in the Jeep, was taken to a hospital in Williamsport IN. Bryans father was released from the hospital on Sunday.

We ask that you keep Bryan, his wife, their three children, family and friends in your thoughts and prayers as they deal with this tremendous tragedy.

Here's what I can add:

I was at the Badlands on Saturday and Sunday this weekend, and I saw this guy working on his Jeep. I didn't know him, but knew of him, and he was quite well known around the jeeping community in Chicagoland.

From what I am told, he broke an axle shaft and pulled it, but failed to replace the stub shaft before reassembling the axle and driving home. This is most probably what caused the catostrophic loss of control on the highway.

Just goes to show you that you never know what will happen, and just becuase you are off the trail for the day you can never be too safe.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.

Just saw this on ROF. They said his Father was with him and was OK? But yes you never know when your time maybe up. Give each one of your loved ones a special hug tonight as there is now a family without someone to hug them. I think all of our prayers go out to those in his family.

That's horrible. On the good side you know he had a great time and was with family on his last day. Good thoughts going out there...

A lesson might be learned from this tragedy...check and double check your equipment before you head back home. Lug Nuts, U-Joints, Tires for large Gashes, ect. Then there are times that there seems to be nothing that could have beed done differently. Prayers for him and his family...

My thoughts are with his family and friends. Sad to lose another Jeeper and what seems like a wonderful member to our community. I hope the best for his family.

What a terrible accident. It sounds to me like he wasn't wearing a seat belt. My thoughts are with his family.

He and his family will be added to my prayers. What a tragedy!

I'm with Darby: Do a pre-flight check ESPECIALLY when leaving the trails.

I agree with all of this except the middle. That roll cage is fine if you roll at low speed, but take a roll at 60 and, well there are no garentees...

Chicagoland LOST, please pass along all of our condolences to the family... :(

That is the sad part..... He was completely sure that he had everything checked before leaving the park. He and whoever was going to go back to Chicago with him were completely sure that everything was bolted correctly before leaving - they must have missed something

This are the words from the other jeeper himself....
" was the guy with Bryan and saw it happen. Bryan was my best friend. It was a case of we just didn't know. He told me that the hub is bolted to the axle the wheel is bolted to the hub it would be fine that was exact words. I was checking on him every couple miles via the CB. We just talked 30 seconds before he said it was fine. I put my mic down looked in my rearview mirror and he was rolling over. It was the most horrific thing I have ever seen. Not only did I lose my best friend that I have ever had because we didn't know better but I had to watch it happen. His dad was his passenger and escaped with cuts and bruises. Bryan died of a head injury. Nothing else was injured on him. Something just hit him in the head during the roll he was still belted in.

Also thank you to whoever it was that helped get Bryan's inlaws to the gas station and all the way to 294. They were on the way to Champaign where he was airlifted but when he passed the came home to be with Stephanie. I was there when they showed up and they told me about the guy in the Cherokee? who had helped them.

I know many of you didn't know Bryan but he was the best person I had ever met. He would do anything for you, He was a great husband and father. I don't think anyone he ever met didn't like him.

He was simply the Best.
"
