Iconic off-roader returns to its storied roots with J8 multipurpose model primarily developed for military use – but also suitable for civilian government applications

London, England – Chrysler LLC today unveiled the Jeep® J8 multipurpose vehicle at the 2007 Defense Systems & Equipment International (DSEi) military trade show, making the legendary vehicle available for reenlistment in active military service.
...
With the all-new 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited as the starting point, Jeep engineers increased its capability and versatility. The frame of the Wrangler Unlimited is reinforced for increased ruggedness and to allow greater payloads – up to a maximum of 1,339 kg (2,952 lbs.). Axles, brakes and suspension components are engineered specifically for more demanding military and civilian government use, including utilizing a leaf-spring suspension system in the rear. The J8's Command-Trac® four-wheel-drive system allows maximum versatility and performance in both on- and off-road conditions.

The Jeep J8 is powered by a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that produces 118 kW (158 hp) and 400 N?m (295 lb.-ft.) of torque, providing towing capability of up to 3,500 kg (7,716 lbs.). The engine is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The J8 also features a unique air-intake system with special filtration and a hood-mounted snorkel that enables the J8 to ford water up to 762 mm (30 in.) deep and operate in sandstorm conditions for up to five hours.

The Jeep J8 is available as a two-door with an extended pickup bed for personnel or equipment transport, or a four-door multipurpose vehicle. It may be produced with numerous vehicle-body and seating configurations in either right-hand- or left-hand-drive.

looks and sounds pretty good.... well until you look at that "hood scoop/air intake" on the hood, who designed that? Tires I would think would be a little bit more aggressive as well but its a start

The hood scoop is a bit "cheezy" but the basic package sounds good. I would only think about it IF it came with the CRD package

My 2002 looked good with that color, even if it was just on the lower panels and both bumpers...but it was gloss. Who has the Army Green KJ with the Army Star ect. on it?...It looks very nice

When I saw that to me it just screamed(third party crap), made me wonder if the article was even real at all.

Article says it will be built in Egypt, that means we probably wont be seeing it in the US.

Truck variant looks real nice. I got pictures of it at Moab with the Liberator, T-rex, and the Skunk Grand sent to me a while back... And no, no plans as of yet for it to be sold in the States.

It is really looking sort of old school jeep, as far as the hood scoop just convert it to the top hat snorkel we have already seen on this forum. But as a traditional Jeep put the deisel in it and I truly believe you have the ground work for an ON or OFF road ROAD WARRIOR

from the military/ civilian govt aspect: while the two door "brute" version looks nice with the pickup bed and all. got a few major issue with the styling. If your vertically gifted, you'll have no real leg room and will not have much room to recline and that means body fatigue. Additionally there would be no room to put equipment/ gear if you had a co pilot or in bad weather.

The four door version on the other hand, I believe would kick booty. plenty of room for personnel and gear. good suspension set up and strengthed frame. I'd take one any day.

for cosmetic preference, swap the rivited hood scoop for the round hummer style intake.

my .dos centavos

Was looking at a lot of the John Deere Construction Euipment at the State Fair that has been adpated for military use and it had a lot of "hardened" material scoops, vents, etc that some would call "cheesy" I bet some Ops guys water/sand locked one of these things during field trials and this was there fix. This is there version of the gasser air intake.
Just a thought,
Boiler

This is why Chrysler is in such trouble. They won't sell this package to the civvie market, and this is the kinda thing we want. IMHO, the entire Marketing dept should be tied to the back bumpers of a bunch of hardcore Jeeps and dragged down the Rubicon.

I say we tie them on the rigs they're trying to sell to us, stock. And then see how many of them they badge as "Trail Rated" afterwards.
