In europe we are very sophisticated peope - we provide sophisticated solutions to sophisticated problems and we think about sophisticated social problems half the time.

In turn, this is how we implement the SEGR into our euro KJs:

Image

Yep that's a bolt wrapped with electricians tape around it stuffed into the vacuum supply to the vacuum modulator behind the airbox. The vacuum line is then garnished with strips to provide some better holding force.

Doesn't throw CEL, never activates the EGR valve.

How did you verify that it disabled the EGR?? Does it disabled the FCV also??

In a way I have only verified that this vacuum output from the modulator goes only to the EGR valve, which is opened by applying vacuum to the valve. No vacuum, no opening.

Edit: Went to the car to chase vacuum lines to make sure. Yep they were the wrong way around. I plugged the vacuum line to the EGR not to the engine. They were put on the modulator the wrong way around :( I will have to try this again to see if it throws me a CEL now. Oh darn!

All I know is that it starts easier in the morning when cold, a little more smooth on the first seconds.

I will try a little test I read about on the net on the bugger later today. I am not sure it will work at all though, I must squeeze the valve from beneath and "observe" engine rpm, it should be dropping.

What's that metallic blue cannister lookin' thingy in the background?

Early US and Euro didn't get a AFC\TV - that started with the 'intelligent' stepper-motor operated EGR ca'05, which is mainly for soccer-moms and -dads, who shudder to think of the violence inherent in the normal Diesel Death Shudder at shutdown

agreed, since the fcv went on the old mans the shutdown is only moderately different.......

Cannister is my oil catch tank, instead of buying a provent I went for racing blue. Gives the engine room more class I say.

Just joking! I got it because there was nothing else to get at that time

I have now plugged both vacuum hoses and upon a single startup there was no CEL thrown. Will do some driving before I can say this will run without throwig a CEL.

EDIT: Little image:

If that works for you with the two screws stuck in the hoses, you can also do this.
Go to the hardware store and get two ball bearings just a little bit bigger than the inside diameter of your vacuum lines.
Take your screws out and push the balls up the hose. Now you can put the hoses back on the EGR and it will “Look” like nothing has been modified but YOU know the EGR isn’t working anymore. Just a thought….

Pre '05 CRD's that are in Europe are a different set up than ours.. ours
have an electronically controlled EGR not vacuum. will not work for the US

Actually that's a really good idea! Another thing which would be easier for me is just to cut the head off the screws and push them up a little further :D

It would work brilliantly if stopped by the police asking me about my emissions (apart from the unlikeliness of it that would be better).

Except when I have to do my inspection test every second year. I think I would like to be able to "enable" my EGR valve to cut the emissions down - I think...

Swap out your ball-bearing hose for a functional one come inspection time....

Dude, have you been peeking under the hood of my '87 MB?

That's a common trick among the MB crowd, with '87 and older MB diesels that have a vacuum actuated EGR and air recirc valve (ie, FCV).

Provided they're the right size, a jar of BB's from Richard's Sporting Goods works just as well, with plenty of spares left over.

My "trick" for my '83 240D is swapping to non-egr manifolds from a '79 SD. Yes, I have a 617.952 (5 cylinder turbo diesel) in my 240D. It's a sleeper.

Ah yes, but it goes behind the engine. Will think about this idea, it could be THE ONE :D

EGR gas and oil mist from the crank case form a sludge in the intake system and plugs them up. At 60k miles expect to need your intake cleaned unless you've taken "other measures"
