Does anyone know why the selec-trac II is on "restriction" from Jeep and not available for any new builds?
My order was in D status for over a month. The dealer finally got the factory rep to call the plant and he was told the selec trac II was on "restriction" and unable to be put on new cars. I switched to command trac and now my car will ship by 4-16. :? :?

Dunno...I got selec-trac II but my build was in Jan. No problems with it so far and I've used it a few times with snowy roads.

I meant to get back on this much sooner. I have your answer for you.. My brother is an engineer for Chrysler (at the World HQ in Auburn Hills, MI) and the following was a response from an engineer who works on the driveline (I'm honestly not sure exactly which components he oversees).. Anyway, here goes...

[in answer to the question - Is/Was the Selec-Trac on restriction?].....

Yes this is true. We were out of production for nearly 2 months for some signifigant issues. Range shift brackets were breaking, and t-cases were getting stuck in neutral. Select track has been back in production since 4/14 though so the restriction should be lifted soon I would think. If he ends up buying one that was built before 4/14 make sure he has the dealer update the t-case software which will address this issue. Otherwise anything built after that is good.

So there you have it. Sounds like you should check the production date to verify... Get the xfer case updated if the production date was before 4/14/08..

That's a good question.. I'm not sure.. My bro knows I have an auto, but I'm not sure if the engineer did. Here's a stupid question.. Does a manual have a transfer case? He mentioned to specifically upgrade the t-case software...

Yep they sure do,the KK uses a electronically shifted t-case,no manual lever like the KJ gets.

Okay, I'm an admitted newbie when it comes to things mechanical, but this sounds somewhat serious. Shouldn't there be some sort of notice sent out to KK owners with the Selec-Trac II? This sounds like something that disables a vehicle, not a simple problem that people can live with until they make it to the dealership.

A fancy name for the shift fork.

Yours operates the same way with the same electronic shifting system, give it time and the command-tracII will have problems also.

Ask any 1st gen GM electronic shifting t-case owners about it and you'll get a mouthful, and the $160 mechanical fix for it.
