Waffle Boards?

Anyone every try these or know of someone who has?

Each ramp weighs 19 lbs.
Each ramp is 48" L x 12" W x 2" D.

http://www.okoffroad.com/ sells them. Not cheap! $300.

I use something I fabbed up that I saw on a 4x4 show on tv. They called them sand ladders. I made mine from angle iron and them all the time when I get stuck. If you are handy with a welder it is real simple to fab up. I also made my own car ramps using a similar design. The hard part is storage in the Jeep, but that will be solved whent I get my cargo basket.

I've used them quite a bit in Africa.

They work great. Just remember to tie them to your rig with a chain so that you can drag them with you when you get out of the sticky stuff. I freed myself from sand, stopped to pick up my waffle boards and got stuck again. It them dawned on me that I should attach the boards to my rig so I could stop where there was traction without having to walk back for the boards.

When they need to be used on an obstacle, we call it 'waffling it'

Thanks Ian,

I wanted to make sure they worked before I considered spending money. Where were you in Africa? I made two visit to Uganda some years back.

I spent about 3 months in Tanzania on a research expedition about 5 years ago and then went to Kenya about a year later. Africa's a great continent. It kind of works it's way into heart. I will go back someday!

So you want to go back to Africa. Ican not wait to go my first trip. My wife is from Tanzania (Kilimanjaro region) Met her while she was teaching Swahili here in Ohio. Since then I have planned each day of what I want to do and see when we go "back home"

You might also check around at military surplus stores for 'Marsden Matting' or 'Perforated Steel Plate'. This is basically what is in Cacher123's pic - it was used in large quantities in WWII to make temporary roads and landing strips.

I am considering taking a short term contract to work in Tanzania! I would be working mostly in Dar Es Salaam... I would love to climb Kilimanjaro. Make sure you get to Kenya to see a game reserve, they are the best in Africa.
