So I had a code go off today. I went to Advanced auto part to get it read P0442 and P0455 evap problem. The guy point to the area behind the throttle body and tell me that's the evap canister. Im not a mechanic but come on.

you're over 5 years old, pick up a foot or two of 5/16th hose and start replacing aging lines

if you don't think it's a bad gas cap, could just be a dry rotted hose leaking

Leak detected. Our evap canister is under the driver side rear of the KJ above the axle. Have you tried a new gas cap yet? Been know to fix this problem. But it could be a leak in one of the rubber hoses that go from the gas tank to the canister though. Check those.

ThunderbirdJunkie is with that thar Jarhead. He would recommend crawling under the rear of the KJ with it running and listening for any hissing.

Good luck in your venture.

BTW

They're not TECHS at advance auto. There is a reason they can plug in a generic code reader for free and tell you "what your problem is".

Ya get what ya pay for

Jarhead? There's a lot of them around here, but not me!

X2 on that smoke test. I've got the p0441 and the stealer said they do there diagnostics which included smoke test for there standard fee. $95 I've even gone to another shop and had that price go higher $140 . That's just to tell me whats wrong. Evap code isn't gonna hurt the KJ. Were considered polluters though.

an Unlit hand torch will find many vacuum leaks

engine will rev when you find it

however, i've never actually tried that with a vehicle that had electronics but technically it should work on any vacuum leak

just don't get the stupid idea to use spacer and some scavenged fuel line with a fogger nozzle to pipe propane or acceteleyne down your carb

ruined a perfectly good 442 like that

EVAP leaks will not react the same as engine vacuum leaks. You can spend some time checking the hoses but you will not be able to see some of them without some major disassembly. Then most vehicles you also need a advance scanner to command the purge soliniod open/close when doing a smoke test otherwise the test will give false leaks,Chrysler's are one brand that most likely needs a commanded operation for a proper smoke test.

Best to pay the $100 or so for thye smoke test, most good smoke tester's run about $1200+ and then you got the scanner you may need which will run you about $3000+ with the proper software.

Ok first what is a smoke test? By reading the post it does not sound like I can do one myself.
I second I had an idea what the code was. I said to the guy could it be my gas cap. He sound it has nothing to do with that. I know he was not the sharpest marble after that.
I third I had my fuel filter changed a few months ago. That is in the tank maybe something was not but back right. I'm also misfireing as well a bit. When thr ain stops I will have to get under the KJ and take a look around. Thanks guys. This forum rocks haha.

EVAP codes could be the gas cap,not always, they also could be a cracked hose but not always.Since you had the fuel filter replaced they had to unhook some EVAP stuff depending on how they did it.A smoke test is a machine that makes smoke that hooks into the EVAP port located in the engine bay(small green cap next to battery),the smoke fills the system to locate the leak.

It's called Advance auto parts, not Advanced auto parts.

Fixed for you.

J/K, couldn't help myself.

Seriously though like you said, that is a trivial matter to call someone one on. There's a lot worse on this board than an extra 'd' in a name when it comes to spelling and grammar. Back on topic...

Glad you are better informed than the tech. I'd check all lines and fittings first, then replace the gas cap like stated above.

Blatant misspelling is a little different than using a modified, correctly spelled, version of the same word :P
