Hey guys, replacing my bumper facia. I know the instructions call for replacing the rivets with plastic pop rivets, but the hardware store down the road didn't have any. I have a ton of aluminum ones. Should I hold out till I can get to the auto parts store or will the AL ones befine?
Thanks
B

They need to be split rivits in any case. Regular old pop rivits won't work, I tried. I got mine from here - http://www.thefastenerwarehouse.com/cat ... 216377.htm - they work fine with a regular pop rivet gun and are the same as the metal ones that are used on the bottom of the front bumper cover and in the front of the wheel well where the bumper cover meets the internal bumper.

I did buy some plastic ones from there too, but they seem to need a special rivet tool. Never did use them. NAPA has some funky ones you seat with a screw driver but they seem real weak. Seems like the ones I mentioned above will work in most of the places the plastic ones are used, but they would be a bit harder to remove if you ever had to do more repair work.

Thanks for the info. Just ordered some. Hopefully I'll get them in time for the weekend...

Went to a NAPA today and they didn't have them in stock. Anyone know what size they are? The instructions I read just say to use a 3/16 drill to drill out the existing ones, so I assume it's a little bigger than that. Love to get some at an auto parts store, but want to get the right size.

Thanks Kev. The napa near me didn't either, but there's a bajillion autoparts and hardware stores around here, so I'm sure I could find something if I knew the proper size.

ok here is some info for you, i just picked some up at napa....

The napa part number is: 7702871 - a 20 pack for 5.99

link - http://www.napaonline.com/MasterPages/N ... tion=Rivet

here is another online store that has them.
http://www.thefastenerwarehouse.com/cat ... 216400.htm

Really the only thing that matters is the diameter has to be 1/4". My napa rivets had a larger head than the stock ones but they were 1/4" so they worked fine and it would only seem to me to hold better.

Hope this works for you, you should be able to find them somewhere, i did however have to order them but they were in the next day.

-Nick

BTW, if you get the napa ones be sure to let them sit over-night soaking in water then soak them in hot water right before you use them. I tried putting mine in just right out of the package and they were extremely brittle. :)

Thanks guys! I'll see if mine come in tomorrow, if not I'll go to pep boys or something. Thanks for the tip on the soaking. I have seen that install thing before, there's a tech article on bumper removal. Step by step. Good stuff.

This is way cool I should never have looked I don't know where else I'ld use them but I would like to buy several different styles just to have them in the tool box if for any other reason a nicer finished look to the regular aluminum pop rivet. :) 8)

You can also find them at many automotive paint/body components stores - you have to also get the tool to apply them as their shaft is a larger than the alum. ones - found that out the hard way when pulling the fender flares off to replace my rear bumper...
