Took 5 Trucks To Get Me Out **UPDATED**

I went wheeling down a local trail, I go down it all the time know all of it like the back of my hand.

So I decide to go down one I havn't been down during the day because there is a couch halfway down and no place to turn around. I start to head down it, aproach the couch. Get out and look. I see there is a slight mud/water stream to the right. The left is a ditch that is mud and water over a foot deep.

(time is 2:30pm)
I decide to go right. I get in to it tires spinning all of a sudden I stop. Can't go forward or back up. My friend in his 4cyl wrangler tries tuggen me out but can't. He only gets me axle deep in the back.
(time is 3:30pm)
Now a ram 1500. Tugging Tugging Tugging BAM! blows his transfer case.

(time is 5:30pm)
Now we are waiting for my friend with a dakota to come. He pulls a me a little but still stuck. So he leaves along with the other two trucks.

(time is 6:30pm)
My good friend with a Rubicon and lockers comes with that and his friends tow truck with a winch. We hook up to the back and try to pull out. Nothing. Still stuck. We find out the tow truck can't get close enough to winch because the ground is to soft for him. The Rubicon hooks up front after about 5-6 hard booty yanks he gets me out
(time is 7:45pm)

Turns out the mud made a suction cup plus there was a stump behind the front passanger tire. These are only two pics from a camera phone I have a video and larger pics waiting to get them from friends camera but will post.

The rear was even deeper!

That's me sitting on the roof with some snowboard goggle's on

waiting for more trucks to come, and my friend not wanting to get out for this whole ordeal because his shoes were "new".

This was at the not so happy carwash

I held up the line because they need to power wash the whole jeep before it went in

Just a random shot from the inside this was taken way before we where close to getting unstuck.

Glad you got out OK, pity about the Ram's transfer case! But what's a "couch"? Over here it's something you sit on in your lounge room.

The most important piece of recovery gear you can carry, it'll get you out of more situations than any amount of winches and raw horsepower will. Given time. But probably less than 5 hours!

Yes as in something you sit on usually found in a living room. This is private property, it's not actual wheeling trails but it's where all the local trucks and atv's go. Idk why there is a couch but I have seen some weird things out in the woods by where I live.

Get a shovel! it just catn't be beaten. The suction the mud exerts on the car has a vertical component (well mostly) but it won`t stop the car from moving sideways. Rocks, holes and logs under the wheeels will. If you use a winch in your situation it could be dangerous cause the car is almost blocked. The parts that are keeping the car from rolling may be damaged or worse, the winch cable may break.

that's what I said with my ranger, and then I got stuck with a buddy of mine. Neither of us had winches, and we couldn't call a tow. We had to walk about 6-7 miles before our cell phones got any service, and wait an hour for our other friends w/a more capable rig. The whole ordeal lasted around 18-20 hrs. I vowed then that would be the last time I get stuck w/o help, which meant selling my truck and getting something I was happy with (plus it gave me a reason to get rid of that lemon!). I bought the Renne, and the first time I got stuck and used the winch, I smiled the whole way out cuz I knew that made everything worth it.

Save the money - get a metal spade or eTool ($5-$20) and a comealong/handwinch/highlift ($30-$60). Those hand-winches can pull 8000lbs or even more if you have a tackle block. They take awhile, but time is something that you have plenty of when recovering a vehicle.

The exact same thing once happened to me, except there was no couch involved, and there was "quicksand" in place of mud and a log. It took me an excavator to get out...yeah...one of those GIANT dinosaur machines.

I fail to see the point of driving through a bog like that when you obviously know you cannot possibly make it... :roll:

This is why I hate mud, always causes more trouble than its worth...cleaning the underbody, getting unstuck, sliding into obstacles w/o proper tires (i.e. MASSIVE SWAMPERS!) Stock tires in a bog like that...no thanks

It's only fun when your going into it at 30mph or when WE think WE can make it.

Fancy rims won't help you get around errant couches. Sure get some chunky meats, but I'd spend the cost of nice rims on more practical mods. However, it's entirely up to you!

Not out here there isn't.

People can, and do, die in the Australian outback because they don't carry the right equipment and or expertise. A German (I think) couple died a couple of years ago when they bogged their 4x4 in the desert and tried to walk the 50km back to the nearest town. When the rescue services found the truck they freed it in about 10 minutes with a little bit of digging and by airing down a bit.

Why is the front tyre completely clean? Don't tell me you tried to drive through there in 2wd? Also, how did you manage to keep the spare more or less clean when the back door is completely smeared with mud?

just a word of advise for you, and any other reading...
Mud like that does create a 'suction', you're right. The best way to break that suction is to pull UP and towards you, not just from the side (towards recovery item/vechicle). You need to find or make some thing to lift the strap or winch line. Anyting that will stay higher than the stuck vechicle will work; a tree, Hi Lift, lumber, etc. But pulling UP will lift the Jeep enough to break the suction and let you out.
Maybe go to a 4x4 clinic. There's a great one givien in Hollister, Esprit de Four.

I bet he isn't locked so in the pic the other tire was spinning and not this one.

my next purchase is a winch setup to go in receivers.. i bought the front receiver already going to install it springtime..

Where did you find a front receiver? Would be very interested to know , thanks about how much was it?

Were you using the front tow hooks? I cant believe they are strong enough to handle that. Were you using two or just one tow hook?

His tire was in water so if it was spinning, it just cleaned it as it spun i guess.
