I pull a 2,200 lb. flatbed car hauler with 4x4s on it that weigh from 3,800 to 5,000 lbs. and I get more MPGs towing that load than I used to get with my '04 Ram 1500 running empty.

I had a 6x12 enclosed trailer that I used the move to the northwest. Sold that and got most of my money back out of that and brought a car trailer. I'm setting it up to tow dead cars to my garage, local only. I have to install a removable winch on it and it's ready. :pepper:

Pulled (with tow rope) a roughly 6000lb 2500 dodge ram, V8, long bed, extended cab. Went great, glad I didn't have to stop that load tho. He was breaking for himself.

They are 31 X 10.5 R15 they rub a bit, But i pounded the pinch welds. Not as terrible as people might think. it rubs in the front, on the front inner fender only at like 3/4 turn then turns fine w/o rubbing, and rubs in the rear, only under extreme movement. stock height now, but im, planning on a lift kit and bumper, and that should take care of it.

What do you guys think about a two horse trailer, with a horse (3,500 lbs.)? They do move around a bit.

Shouldn't be any more problem than the 3500 lb (actually closer to 4100 lb) enclosed 6x12 box that I pulled with my CRD. Live loads like animals or liquids can be 'fun' in that the handling might wobble a little... But you will get the feel for it fairly quickly. Add to that, the horse trailer and horses aren't heavier than the CRD, so not much chance of "tail wagging the dog" through the hitch. Just get a bar that keeps the frame of the trailer close to level

No need for a weight-distributing hitch on this either. Those horse trailers are fairly balanced when full of horse, unless the owner stupidly loads the 'tack room' area with 500 lbs of sweet feed and overloads the tongue. Your CRD will pull it like its not even there.

You guys pulling these heavy loads, are you just doing around the town trips or long distances? I'm asking because I'm thinking of towing my 4500# YJ down to Rubicon from BC, Canada next summer but am concerned the combined weight of YJ + trailer.
Besides the ECO tune, any recommendations on towing setup?

Well, in the morning I'll be towing my Rubicon LJ with the CRD about 120mi. on a flat bed trailer, just for sh!ts and giggles, as I have my Dodge 2500 for real work. I'll let you you guys know how it does. I took it on a test run this evening around the country highways and backroads here to get a feel for it, and gotta say I'm impressed!!!! Stops fine and no ill effects other than a bit sluggish on the starts and uphills..........But that to be expected. Ifall goes well, I also plan to pull this combo when going to ECS at Windrock next month.

Here's the Jeep and trailer I'll be hauling from when I 1st went and bought it.......Will have pics tomorrow of it behind the CRD!!!

I tow my army jeep on 14 foot trailer, about 4000lb's total weight. I use a weight distributing hitch as advised in the owner's manual. This combination pulls very nice with the CRD.

i towed a 6x12 uhual from columbus, oh to napa, ca just about a month ago. got about 16mpg average, stopped and started just fine the whole way there. if i had to guess i'd say it weighed about 5500lbs. plus i had a few hundred pounds in the back of the jeep. she was loaded down, but made the trip fine. after that trip im not afraid to tow anything that i would need to now.

I bought my CRD to tow my J/24 sailboat. I weighed the boat and trailer on a public scales and found the combo weighs 3985lbs with about a 230lb tounge weight. Well under 5000lbs.

When I tow this rig between 55 and 60mph, I get 20mpg in the CRD.

I'm stuck with the F31 and so towing up hills makes the transmission hunt for the right gear so I'm saving up for the GDE Eco/Hot Tune, TCM Tune & new Torque converter to handle the power. Probably do the Eco Tune first.

...BTW, anyone have a ball park figure as to how much it is to replace a torque coverter?

I have the neutered F37 and I tow a small 3,000lb trailer up & down the Grapevine and up to Tahoe with no problems. Whenever I hit any kind of grade I switch OD off and generally can climb in 3rd OK. If I get behind a slow truck I may have to shift down to 2nd, I don't let the trans shift as it wants in these conditions. On the flat I can tow in 4th, no problem, I just avoid 5th as I would be going too fast MPH and stress the engine/trans more than I want.

If you find a good place for the TC service in CA do post it. 79,000 miles now, recently had the trans oil & filter service and everything looked good inside.

I'll have to see what I can do with pics I have pics of most of them, but on my old laptop. So on a Tow Dolly I have towed:

1998 Honda Hatch -50miles
1997 Acura Integra -40miles
1995 Honda Civic -40miles
1984 CJ-7 Jeep -225miles
1969 Mustang -30miles
1966 Mustang -25miles

I refrained from towing my 1999 Bobcat 763 home from where it bought it, it is only 9 miles but with 5500lbs of machine plus whatever the trailer woulda been I thought it would be too much. Going to buy a popup camper to tow to New Hampshire from Ohio to moose hunt in October.
