My cv boot has a hole in it. Most of the grease has come out. I'm going to pump it full of grease today and try to seal it back up.

I'm not sure if the joint has been ruined?

What are the symptoms of a bad cv joint? Clunking, grinding, swooshing, empty wallet, wife leaves, dog runs away?

I have heard some clunking recently when I hit bumps in the road.

Ok, I don't have any crunching but the Tear is bigger than I thought. I doubt I can repair it. Has anyone patched a hole this Big.

If I have to replace the hole thing, are there any heavy duty cj joint or boots I can get?

Wow, that stuff is everywhere!! I hate trying to clean all that up. I do not believe any HD cv's are out yet, they will be this summer Ive heard. How did you go about doing that? I think you can buy just the boot.

cv joint will sound like wrachting when you turn. after you fill it with grease clean the boot and try sealing it with a clear Silicone you can use alot all over and around the hole that should patch it up. that if you dont hear the wrachting sound. ball joint normally clunk when you hit a bump. hope i could help

The inter CV boot is $30 and the outer is $70 and they are dealer only items

I don't think you can repair that

I'm not sure how it happened. I haven't been wheeling lately.

I was planning to drive 700 miles to PA today and tow a yj back home.

Tell me if I'm crazy.

What if I pack it full of grease. Wrap it with a roll of duct tape and a zip lock baggy and go pick up the yk and tow it back.

Would it make it without doing more damage?

It probably wont make it. You lost a lot of grease. The short shaft is probably $200. I would replace it before you go to PA. I know the roads there are pretty bad. Dont take the chance.

I had a torn cv boot too. Took about a week to get into the dealer to have it fixed. I asked them about a trip I had planned. They told me it's no big deal,, go ahead and take the trip. I drove around for about 2 weeks and took the trip of a couple hundred miles,, no problem. Of course, I found the torn boot right after it happened so I knew the cv joint wasn't screwed up.

I drove mine for about a week the first time I tore one... and I drive a LOT. I wouldn't sweat it too bad, but if it gets wet or muddy, you're gonna kill the shaft. I didn't worry about killing it because I was replacing it anyway. If you're gonna try and save it, I wouldn't drive it.

You also won't get any tape to stay on it when you drive, even in 2WD, the CV still rotates and all tape will just fly off (maybe if you know how to clean the boot really well without water and there isn't any greece anywhere on the boot). I would replace the boot before driving in any bad weather or long distance or in dust.
