Ladies and Gents,

Just to let you know, I like BIG oil filters, they hold more oil, and they should filter more. With this in mind, I was playing again a couple of weeks ago. I installed a full quart size PH 8A Fram (Ford Filter) on my 3.7. I needed to trim the oil drip funnel on the diff. to have more than an 1/8" clearance for the filter. So I drimeled off about 1/4". So far no leaks, oil pressure is the same as before, and I can add an extra 1/2 quart of oil (or your favorite oil additive to a full five quarts)! More oil flowing around the engine, the cooler the oil stays, you shouldn't get oil starvation, and more filter area to filter your oil. Another one of those "old timers" tricks.

Al

Any of you motor heads see any problems with this? Your thoughts please!

Doesn't 100% of the oil pass thru the filter membrane? I don't see how adding a bigger filter should improve your filtering.

Adam,

Point well taken, the OEM filter does pass 100% of the oil, and filters it too, but the more surface area you have to filter the oil the better, first the larger surface area will not clog as fast, more area the more oil can pass through, cleaning faster, and than there is the added benefit of the extra oil. Its hard to explain, but the more filtration area the better!

If you really think about, the extra filtration area, may be overkill since we aren't at the race track, and we aren't desert racing in high areas of dirt. The ulitmate cleaning would be a dual filter system, what ever doesn't get collected by the first will get caught by the second.

Thanks!

Al

Al,

Have you expirmented or tried looking at the filter for the 4.7 v8. Since they are similar engines and share some similar parts I was wondering if the 4.7 filter would fit. I know the parts manual list a differnet filter, but never really investigated it.

Have you thought of an oil bypass filter that would catch smaller particles than your original spin-on could never get? And also a filter-mag to catch, and hold on to the small metallic particles in the original filter?

A magnet would be to easy. If you ever get the chance to meet Al, you will understand that the more of a challange it is the more he wants to do it.

One other added benifit would be less oil breakdown due to the fact that it will get the chance to set in the filter longer and will stay a degree or two cooler.

I currently work with semi trucks.
Most engines, i.e., Cats, Cummins and Detroits use 2 oil filters.
Yeah, they hold about 10 times as much oil as our rigs do, but the advantage of more and/or bigger filters would help any engine.

Another good tip, well, in my mind anyway, is a magnetic drain plug.
These plugs catch and hold any metal that finds its way into your oil pan.

So, take Al's tip and get a bigger filter. More filtration and a bit more oil.

Does that Filtermag thing really work? I've been mentally toying with the thought of getting one because I change my own oil.

So the PH8 filter is the same size, expect for a longer length as the OEM filters? All the in and out holes line up?

Al sounds like my kind of guy. I have a filtermag on my Liberty and the first time I changed my oil with the filtermag installed I opened up the filter and found quite a bit of metal particles stuck to the insides of the filter. I have a while to go until the next filter change, I'll take a picture next time. I plan on having my Liberty for a long time and think the filtermag is worth the cost, plus installation is simple.
If Al wants a challenge, try to find a place in the engine compartment to install a bypass oil filter, and then find a oil return path. I've had most of the components for quite some time now and finally found a non-invasive way to return the oil back to the oil pan. And a place to mount the bypass filter. It doesn't seem like anyone else is interested in bypass filtering. I have posted before with no responses.
Wouldn't having a filter to remove the 5 - 15 micron particles, that do the most engine damage, be better than installing a larger filter that still can't remove them?
Through the years, I have done a lot of detective work finding out about this subject (Full flow filters, Bypass filters, etc.) and the science seems good. I don't want to sound like a know it all, not my intension, I have a lot to learn. I applaud all of those trying things out of the norm.

Thanks Wasatch15 for the input on the Filtermag, I think I'll pick one up since they are pretty cost effective and do perform a long term service. I also plan on keeping my Liberty for a long time. Or at least until my weed of a boy outgrows it.

Ok its past my bed time, so this may sound a little silly, but since the PH 8 fits, why not just order a remote filter plate, plumb the lines to the better filter. One those plates are relatively cheap the hoses could be pointed downward towards the steering rack, and with specially made hydrualic hoses one could run the oil from the engine to a remote filter than back to the engine utilizing the filter plate.

The remote filter plate would be a good idea if you could find a place to put it where maintenance wouldn't be a nightmare.

I just got mine. Already stuck it on, powerful magnets. But be aware, when you're looking at the pictures, it may seem like you're getting two, but you only get one.

For those interested in the Filter Mag, it's a great idea, and seems to be very effective from what I hear from the people that use them. I planned on ordering one, but after spending all of my cash on supplies for a tuneup with only the best oil, filter, etc, I didn't have enoiugh money leftover. However, I found some of those magnetic name tag things- really strong magnets that stick to the back of a nametag instead of using a safety pin type system. I stuck 4 of them on my new K&N oil filter, and they are really powerful. I figure it will work just as good. My dad's business makes the name tags, so he can get them by the box. They aren't cheap, but $2 a magnet means you can put 4-7 on there for less than a filtermag costs. I just thought I'd list another alternative for the budget savvy folks.
