Well yesterday I was traveling down A6 towards Saarbrucken over here in Germany. I was following a Semi looking truck (most of the vehicles over here are funky looking). I was about 5 car lengths behind him traveling about 50mph if that. All of a sudden a rock hit my window so hard my ears were ringing. I didn't see anything on the window but I definitally heard it. Well I looked at it after I got to work and I saw the spider web where the rock had hit it, down where the windo is black. I was  . After work I went to the truck and started it. Forgot the heater was on and the second I turned the key the heat hit the window and oop it cracked about 4 inches up and curved about 3 inches towards the passenger side.

Woke up this morning and started the truck put everything on cold and let it warm up. Went out to the truck and it was cracked all the way across  . So I brought it in to ABC auto glass and thank god for a 200 dollar deductable. Its going to cost 500 Euro which is almost 700 dollars. But I will have back at 1300 and be good as new!! I just put my LOST KJS sticker on there about a month ago that I got of decalkits.com and now I have to get another one!

Just thought I would vent. Thanks for listening

Or dumptrucks, they always seem to "drop" things out the back.

You should see the front of my Liberty. I have 4 chips in the window and many more paint chips on the front end. I have learned to pass semi's or put another car between myself and the semi truck / cement trucks.

Since you have to pay the deductable for the window glass anyway, isn't all of the paint damage also rolled into the same insurance event? I think that's how it would work here in the US with insurance, since it's not an accident, comprehensive would cover all of it, minus the deductable.

I've made the mistake ONCE of not having glass coverage. Windshields are expensive, but shop around - I found $200 difference from one place to the next. Those glass places get most of their payouts from the insurance company, so they don't have to be competitive in price. I think in mass, zero deductable glass coverage is included, so it's no big deal anymore.

Doesn't that kind of stuff just grind you?

Be thankful it was just a rock coming off. We were behind a guy on a flat bed that lost the sofa off the back. We didn;t hit it, but here was potential.

I had that happen in my daily driver a few years back...my insurance company (State Farm) said to always get the license plate number and state when that happens, and they (the ins co) will go after their insurance company to pay the damages.

In defense of truckers (I happen to be an over the road driver), the vast majority of us make it a point to properly secure our loads. But keep in mind that we have eighteen wheels that tend to pick up road debri and toss it, thus the DOT requirement for mudflaps. However, road debri being what it is, if you follow any semi or other large truck too closely, you inevitably will one day experience being pelted by something.

This past summer my wife and I drove across country to visit family. Ahead of us, a drop deck semi pulled onto the two lane highway with a trackhoe loaded on the deck. He had pulled out from a dirt sideroad. As I gained on it, I noticed a large amount of rock/dirt/mud being tossed and adjusted my following distance to compensate and minimize hitting any of the debri falling mostly from the semi's tires. As luck would have it, a truck passing in the opposite direction must have grabbed a hold of small rock falling off the drop deck and tossed it directly at our vehicle. The rock impacted the the windshield on the passenger side, causing C-shaped crack about an 1 1/4 inches across. The impact point was at the center of the crack. Within seconds, my lovely wife pulled out a lipstick applicator and "painted" two red eyes just above the impact point, thus creating a smiling "Happy Crack", which constantly reminds us of our trip.

Two days after I had bought my new '99 TJ Sport a few years back, a truck passing on the opposite side of the interstate tossed a rock at the windshield, creating a crack about two inches in length. Upsetting as it can be, I looked at it as the TJ's first "battlescar". It's a matter of perspective and how you react to it that defines your character.

Remember, windshields were designed to protect a vehicles occupants. And though they're a PITA to replace, it beats the alternative. Being a motorcyclist as well, I can attest to the pain a tossed rock inflicts... lol.

Life happens.

I know that road. Travelled it many times. My girlfriend is from Neunkirchen. :)

darn that's expensive. I paid $283 Canadian. But then Calgary is the windshield replacement capital of the world (Denver is busier, but per capita we win).

I hate flying objects that hit my windshield, fortunatly, I've been lucky so far. You wouldn't think our KJ glass would cost that much being flat, and not as curved as most windshields. I've had a few hard hits, but no crack. The KJ's front windshield is not angled as most which catches more rocks. My wife's new Commander has the same problem, it's windshield is more upright than most also.

I've started getting the bigger chips fixed with acrylic at the glass shop. It is proving to be WAY cheaper than replacing the glass when the chips take off and crack across the windshield. I am on my 3rd windshield in my 03. My insurance deductible is $200, but it only covers 3 windshields in 5 years...after that it'll cost me about $600 - $700 to replace...

I drive 90 miles of a long desert highway to get to work. The speed limit on this road is 65mph. Unfortunately, the only way to keep from getting rock blasted behind one of the many rigs I must pass, is to stay so far behind them that waiting for a pass opportunity gets to be almost impossible. So my 05 has it's fair share of chips and nicks. Lucky so far that I don't have any that will spider out. "So Far!"

i just drove 380 miles yesterday, and received my first pitted/small crack from a rock....well had it replaced with some acrylic filler from an insurance approved windshield replacement and he said that in Colorado they are currently trying to just get more insurance approved places that DO NOT require you to pay your deductable with the insurance agency to get your windshield fixed (correct me if im wrong coloradans) but all we had to do was call our agency and they pay the shop for us, no money from us on the deductable or raises our premiums.... and the shop ends up getting paid a little bit extra money if you just had your insurance pay for it rather than out of your own pocket. The reason for us not taking the dent is because they call it a safety problem when the pit spider cracks straight into your line of sight... this is how the employee at the glass shop worded it...we'll see how true it is.

if EVER that happens I am following that truck til he parks and then call my insurance company.. they think they are safe with those stickers that state 'we are not responsible for rocks coming from the road'.. well it didnt come from the road it came from your TRUCK moron..

Problem is alot of times their insurance companies will say that you have to prove the rock came off the truck and not off the road. My DAD is an OTR driver and had that same thing happened to him in his pickup a rock came off the rear tray cause the driver didnt wipe it off before he left the quarry (the part just behind the rear gate on the dump) he pulled the guy over who apologized and gave him his insurance info but the insruance company was shady and told Dad to prove that the rock came off the truck and not the highway...they never paid up

Ah yes, what we really need in this world of ours-more road rage. I have had tires slashed, windshields broken, a radio stolen (thankfully not in my KJ). Seriously folks, check your insurance policy to make sure you have FULL coverage (including glass). If you pay a deductible-you porbably have a cheaper premium. If not-try shopping...

I've been driving for 25 years and never cracked a windshield. I've had my liberty for less than 45 days and have two major cracks and need to have the windshield replaced. Two rocks in one freakin week on the same stretch of Route 1, what are the odds? I feel like I just bought a rock magnet.

Just be glad you have a windshield to block it from hitting you. I have had rocks draw a good amount of blood even through my jeans when riding my motorcycle on the highway. I make it a point not to get behind them either after a few of those experiences.
