NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors is in talks to buy DaimlerChrysler AG's struggling Chrysler group in its entirety, according to several reports.

According to the reports, sources in Germany and the United States said high-level talks between GM (up $0.16 to $36.60, Charts) and DaimlerChrysler (up $2.50 to $72.75, Charts) executives are taking place.

Chrysler Group announced Wednesday it would be cutting about 13,000 workers over the next three years as a part of a restructuring plan. Reports also said its German parent was considering selling or spinning off the unit.

Talks of an alliance between GM and DaimlerChrysler was first reported last week in Germany's Manager-Magazin.

Chrysler's Valentine's Day massacre
The German publication said DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche had met with GM Chairman Rick Wagoner about a possible sale of Chrysler to the automaker.

Other unnamed sources said to be familiar with the discussions confirmed the reports for Reuters and the industry newspaper Automotive News.

DaimlerChrysler employed J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. to consider options for the Chrysler Group, to help the automaker explore strategic options, according to reports.

But others are also skeptical on whether the discussions are real.

"This would be a at least $5 billion plus deal and GM is not that liquid right now," John Casesa said, an automotive analyst with Cases Strategic Advisors LLC. "I'm not convinced at all and I think it's unlikely."

Officials for DaimlerChrysler and GM issued no comments on the reports.

DaimlerChrysler has long tried to reverse the drop in sales with previous cost-cutting moves but slipped into the No. 4 spot last year behind Toyota (down $0.37 to $136.40, Charts) in the United States.

Renault Nissan's (down $0.16 to $23.32, Charts) Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn expressed interest in the past in buying the automaker.

Yeah, just read that on CNN. GM has enough problems already. Are they determined to go down in flames or what? This is bad.

I actually just got a little physically sick imagining what GM would do to Jeep if they got a hold of it. Seriously...I can see Tahoes with Jeep grilles and round headlights and it's literally sickening. I would MUCH prefer to see Renault snag it, since they would more than likely leave much of the company alone rather than tampering...

Woops, back to the toilet to barf some more tahoe/grandcherokee sensored word child out of me.

Jeep has always been tossed around. I don't want to see GM buy Chrysler (it can't do either side any good)

Renault/Nissan venture i think would be the best if it were to happen. I don't think Honda or Toyota would even think about touching Chrysler, Subaru and Suzuki, i don't think have enough money nor the desire to want anything to do with them.

It is a great opportunity for a Chinese or South Korea car company though.

Jeep already has. They boxed up the 4 door like a H3, and the Commander is boxy like a H. Who stole from whom? I like that truck too. Put a big ole fifth wheel on it.

Why don't we just buy Jeep... I sure if we collect like $5 from everyone we could get enough... Jeeps.. for Jeep owners.. by Jeep owners.

It is sad though that we keep getting bounced around.. But I guess there is a reason we do..

why not easy way to establish north american research facilities, a huge dealer network.

it really is an opportunity for a chinese company, whether or not it would be good or not for the US has yet to be determined.

The Jeep Cherokee started the boxy design in 1984. Fairly sure they win that battle.

I just meant that the newer Jeeps have become boxy. Thought they might be trying to stay up with the Jones's. Guess they went back to their old, 23 year old styling then. History repeats itself.

This will never happen! Come on - don't believe the press all the time.

A partnership to share technology... Sure

A merger - never

Well CBS Evening News ran a little blurp on the potential GM Chrysler merger.....God I hope this is just speculation and that nobody is serious about any of this....

New Venture Gear was a joint-venture between GM and Chrysler. At least GM would have a real "American Revolution" if they bought Jeep.

Turns out it was talks to share ideas on how to turn their profits (lack therof) around. As heard from a reliable source within the company.

you want to look at something scary.....look at the liberty's tail lights and then look at the tail lights off of a 2005 Chevy 1500, they are exactly the same! The chevy's are just much longer....i hope these are the only parts we share with chevy no offense
