Sounds like we've become the Jeep snobs that Lost was the refuge from. We have seen the enemy and he is us, lol!

'05 KJ NSG370 6-spd
'79 Cherokee t-18 4spd

I'll take a manual over an auto any day so I may be biased as well. My current fleet: '74 Dodge W100 383 NP445 4 speed, '74 Dodge W200 318 NP435 4speed, '67 Kiaser-Jeep M715 230 4 speed. The engine braking alone is worth it to me, as well as the less heat buildup from all the converter slippage. Plus with a manual it either goes or it doesn't. There's not 9 million things that can go wrong down the line to keep you from moving. Either way, the Compass is definitely an oddball in the Jeep lineup. As far as CAFE, it stands for Corporate Average Fuel Economy, so yes, it is by manufacturer and not brand but you can only have so many small 4 cylinder cars by the same brand before it gets ridiculous and expensive so they spread them out over the different names so they can pick up sales from all the dealers with the many brand names.

The slippage is what makes an auto so beautiful when reversing down steep hills, especially in snow.

But dont get me wrong. I love manuals, and I would have gotten one if I knew the 6-spd was an option on the KJ when I got mine. But I am jsut saying that each has its own benefits.

Heh, I actually forgot to include the Renegade in my "fleet". It's a 6 speed manual also, lol. But yeah autos have a purpose and it's more of a matter of personal preference and driving style. I also believe that the CVT has a long, long way to go before it will be a piece of a trail rig. Remember, we have had autos for over 50 years and are just now getting some that will handle the abuse that a big diesel will put out.

The Compass is not the first car Jeep has built.

In pratical terms, the gear ratio on the Compass is better than the Wrangler Rubicon.
