After having Cherokees and (CJs just for fun) for quite a while I needed something newer, and had to have 4 doors, like the Cherokee, have to haul my parents every now and again. Liberty fit the size I wanted, 6 cyl. etc. It has NEVER been in any kind or repair shop except for the alignment after I lifted it. So no problems at all. Oh and I got mine 9/21/04 and currently has over 75,000 miles so I do drive it some. Would I buy another one yes but NOT the newer style they are coming out with, plain ugly and bigger, not what I want. Will I buy another Jeep, of course but if they do not come out with something similar sized etc to the current Libby then its back to buying lower mileage Cherokees and running them to death.

I voted for the second option. I won't buy another Liberty because the next generation are too bulky and fugly to me, and the existing stock have serious design flaws, starting with the infamous ball joints. Now, I do like the KJ I have, but it's had it's share of problems, and the last half year or so I've been thinking: should I sell it before it depreciates too much? (and buy what?) I personally feel the current crop of vehicles available (with the exception of the Land Cruiser available in Australia) are too complex and "sensitive". (Tire pressure sensors on a 4x4?) If I could find a good used BJ70 I'd be all over it. 8) Just my two cents. I'd rather have a basic, uncluttered vehicle but apparently they are no longer being made.

heck yeah i'd buy another 02-07 model. the liberty has weaknesses (ball joints), but so do all brands and all models. some weaknesses are just bigger on some models. how about the v-6 transmission failures on hondas from 99-02. or the toyota 4runner headgasket recall in the early 90's, toyota sludge fiasco from 97-02. the liberty is in my opinion is the best vehicle on the market in its class, and that is why i bought it. it can be utilitarian or luxury, what ever you want.

You better believe i would buy another jeep. I would love to have a new wrangler. Im interested in the new grand with the crd. We crd liberty owners are concerned about the tranny and torque converter and there is the egr issues... i wonder if they learned anything from the liberty and have fixed things. I saw they are using the same tranny in the grand. If they finally worked a good torque converter behind the engine then i dont think there will be a problem. I mean mine has 265 pounds of torque that new 3.0 crd has 376 if they didnt change a thing then it will just be more problems.
The good thing about this is they have not given up on diesels so there might be hope for us current crd owners.
I cant wait till 2008, a wrangler with a diesel  watch out

For me, there's nothing better than the 02-07 Liberty. I would only consider buying an off-road vehicle that is small, hard-topped, and Jeep branded. The Liberty combines all three criteria. Just about every other aspect of the vehicle except those three things can be modded....

Will the '08 Wrangler have a diesel option? Oh man, that sounds like the ticket. The new 4 door Rubicon with sway bar disconnect is absolutely awesome. The only complaint I have heard is on the 3.8 not having the torque of the old famous 4.0. Man, would a diesel ever solve that issue....Woo hoo
Knock on wood, I have had NO problems with my newer '06 Liberty and I feel it is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I would purchase a new one in a heart beat.

I have a 2004 Sport and have had only one thing go wrong in over 65K miles: the back window defroster popped off (and I'm certain it's a poor design; way too much tension on the cable). But would I buy the next generation 2008? No way.
Why not? The single biggest issue I have with mine is mileage. So what did they do? Make it bigger. I don't need bigger (in fact, wouldn't mind a little bit trimmer, esp weight) I need more efficient. Why is the 5 speed auto only available with the new 4.0 engine? Why are they so reluctant to bring back the diesel?
Why get rid of the side-gate rear door? I don't want a huge mini-van hatchback, I want the one-touch back (and a hatch release button on the dash, please!) And I don't need the spare underneath either.
There's something strange about the way they have developed the Nitro/2008 Liberty but I can't put my finger on it.

I did not realy find a choice that fit in for me/us
we like the new grand or comander with the 5.7 hemi for a tow rig but as far as another trail rig I think jeep is out
I would buy an FJ for a trail rig but I find that the new jeeps realy dont stand up to "trail abuse" like the FJ will

Oh yeah I like the KJ and will be keeping it to replace the TJ as my ride for around town when the TJ goes on a trailer
it will be getting "maned up" how ever

Heres my additional $.02:

The 3.7 seems fine on torque. I have only ever driven the 4.0 attached to an automatic and I thought that my 1.8t golf was torquier than the 4.0 hooked up to an auto.... just my $.02....

If the JK comes in diesel, it had better come in a diesel/manual tranny option. I refuse to buy an auto, and it botheres me that the dealers claimed that I would not find a diesel powered libby with a manual tranny.

I wish that the newer libbies didn't have the fogs mounted in the grill.

nothing wrong with an oppinion but I will say that maby you were driving a 4 banger nat a 4.0
I have a 4.0 auto TJ and a 3.7 KJ both with 3.73's and both on tires with an OD of ~29.5" so the final gearing is very close and I can tell you that as far as "get up on it" power the TJ is by far better than the KJ
The TJ can almost idel up on to stuff that the KJ needs a good bit of gas then it jumps up on it ,not easy to wheel gently and I like to wheel gently
this also makes the heavier KJ bang around way more than I like
I dont realy know if the FJ would be more like the TJ or the KJ but I could find out with a test drive
I do know that the 3.8 ,or what ever comes in the JK, has a similar torque curve as the KJ wich means that it will act the same

Lets just say DC should give the "Salesman of the Year" award to the next rep that can sell me another Jeep or any DC product following this ownership experience. I will admit that much of my issues are diesel related and few are specific to the KJ. It was their arrogant state of denial when I first voiced my mechanical complaints followed several months later by repeated TSB's and finally recalls tells me something is fundamentally wrong inside this company. They have exposed their dark side and not fullfilled their resopnsibility to me as a customer. Simply put, I will choose my next vehicle from a different manufacturer.

along that line I can tell you something that I learned from a guy who works for DCX and lives near me
there is no longer a seperate jeep devision but rather they lumped the jeep line in with the truck/suv line and this is why you are getting junk
as far as off road capable rigs go
all the guys who worked in the jeep dept. have either retired or quit due to the cutting corners approach
some of them have started up companies like Nth degree mobility or have now gone to work for the after market world
this is also part of the reason for the HUGE amount of products out there for the TJ/YJ

You can also look at the new adds and know that they ,DCX, is handing the off road market to Toyota and Nissan they dont realy show the new JK doing any thing other than carrying 4 people and there junk on a dirt road but all the FJ and Exterra adds are aimed at the off roading aspect
even GM is getting in on it with the H3
If jeep wants to hold on to the "nich" that was carved out by them 65+ years ago they had better do something or they will loose it to an import

I can tell by reading many threads that we are polar opposites on vehicle needs (which is not to be intrepreted as a negative). Personally pay little attention to how a vehicle is marketed and like most potential buyers have absolutely no interest in driving off-road. You are right, Jeep is sacrificing the off-road market and morphing into the mall-wheel-drive market, thus the Compass and Patriot. With it comes a different type of customer with different expectations. They had better go back to the basics and get their act together if they want to survive.

Actually,

All of the trucks and Jeeps have been engineered out of the same building (on Plymouth road) since Chrysler moved out of Hamtramick back in the '90's. More commonly refered to as JTE - Jeep, Truck, Engineering

All of the marketing is done in the Auburn Hills complex...

Isn't the TJ one of the most capable Wranglers that Jeep has produced in a while? The Grand sure is nice too... But I do like my Liberty and I'm going to keep it for as long as the wheels are attached to it.

Yeah something like that
but I know that the story behind Nth degree goes someting like this
the guy who started Nth was on the TJ design team when they started work on the JK he and a few other were not happy about the way DCX wanted to cut corners and give up off road perfomance for on road ride
we are talking about a jeep ,the one ,the only ,the original off road vehical turning more street frindly and giving up off road abality?
now other mfg have capitalized on that fact

This is why I would only buy a new jeep for a tow rig and to haul the family ,mall crawl, and a something else for a trail rig
I also like the KJ and plan on keeping it but IMO it was the last decent thing that jeep made

LIKE THE LIB IN RENEGADE FORMAT [REAR TRAC-LOC, ETC...], AND MINES BEEN ALMOST TROUBLE FREE. HAS GONE EVERYWHERE I'VE ASKED IT TO, A COUPLA TIMES DID NOT EXPECT TO GET THRU - AND DID!
BUT; NEXT TIME AROUND, THINK I'M GONNA GO WITH THE TOYOTA FJ, AND LEARN HOW TO WHEEL WITH A CLUTCH. NO COMPLAINT WITH RENE, JUST THINK THE TOY IS PROBABLY BETTER.
OF COURSE, I'LL ALWAYS HAVE A GRAND WAGONEER OR 2 FOR MY REAL FUN!!!

Wingman, the one comment I have for you on that note is that some genius at yota decided that it would be brilliant to offer automatics standard, and CHARGE an additional $2k for selling a manual. IMHOP that bonehead move caused me to write off the FJ because it puts it (with a manual tranny) at a higher entry price point than a JK Sahara unlimited. For that simple reason, I would not purchase one (That and it reminds me of something you would see on super mario brothers 3, but I could get over that if they weren't so cocky to think that an automatic tranny should be standard and manual should be an option. Grrrr. Just rubs me the wrong way. That in my humble opinion is the tail wagging the dog.

Jason:
Just out of curiosity.... how come Land Rover has managed to produce a great vehicle that is regaurded as a phenominal off road vehicle, but still sought after by rich people as well as safari rolling ozzies? I'm not trying to defend jeep for "watering down" the product line, but why and how has land rover managed to do it but Jeep can't? I know that land rover has made some mall crawlers, but when it comes down to it, the defender and the disco are still awesome OHV's.... Maybe it's because the british military still uses them? I dunno, but I was seriously looking at a disco before I went with the libby, and the only reason I went with the libby was because my wife liked it more (and I was pretty evenly split once I had found a manual tranny in each)...

first it is real simple the disco's ,wich is the only LR I have ever wheeled with, do OK on the trail about the same as a KJ
how ever befor you take it on the trail you need to have a full set of tools and be a good mechanic ,they dont like to get dirty
the LR that they get out side the US are not like the ones we get
sure the Defender is almost in a class with the TJ but try to find one

also you for some reason dont like the auto trany why?
I have wheeled both and I can tell you even with a good hand throtle the manual is still a dog on the trail compaired to the auto
you can not walk over stuff as easy
maby toyota knew this going in to the FJ and that is why they did it that way to make it so that the general public who want to go out and wheel will be able to buy an FJ with an outo for less and still get good ruged off road performance
I dont know
