I agree that you should drive another 6spd, and not corner in 1st; however, it does sound like you are getting ESP/TC to kick in and hesitate your power. I've just gotten used to it, although I still dream of trading her in on a CJ-7...

from the complaints, it almost sounds like the the jeep is in 4-lo

not to be a jerk but, any chance you suck at driving stick and dont know it? maybe

I have never heard anyone complain like this over a manual trans. unless they dont know how to drive. My big question is, you test drove the jeep before buying, how did you not notice it sucked? :?:  :?:  :?:

TC= Traction Control
at least in this case

When I test drove it I liked it. I don't remember any of these problems, but even if it wasn't smooth I would have just written it off as inexperience with a new clutch. Driving a different car with a manual tranny is always a little rough at first. I drove my last one 197,000 miles with no clutch replacement ever, so I think I know what I'm doing.................or I may just be a moron. I guess I'll know after I test drive a different one this evening.

could it be the overdrive? I know on my auto that sometimes it will feel sluggish until I step on it a little and feel that jolt of power and the jeep comes back to life. I always thought that was the over drive system making it more effecient.

Yes. I've taken it offroad 3 times now, so I know how each mode feels.
It's definitely in 2WD.
I love it in 4-WD High. Don't notice any problems, but that's probably because I'm not shifting so much.

4-WD Low makes some strange sounds, but I'm thinking that may be normal..............like I had it in 3rd or 4th gear and there's kind of a high-pitched whistling sound from the front somewhere.

That's normal gear noise. I used to take off in 4LO in 3rd gear in my old CJ5.

That is true. I changed the title to reflect that.
Specifically I hate 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears.
I hope it is only temporary hate though.
I love the rest of it.
I actually got to test the 4-wheel drive more than I wanted to last night, and it got me out of a mess.

I'll tell you a little secert about the 4wd system, the more you use it, the smoother it will function. I use mine at least once a month in both ranges. If nothing else, I play with it in the driveway. There's people who buy 4x4's and won't engage the 4wd for years, then complain because it's stiff or hard to get in, sometimes, it may even break, so don't be afraid to use it.

Well...uh...that would be your problem. Duh. Seriously....you drove the same truck with the same clutch for almost 200,000 miles and you're complaining that a new vehicle with a new clutch feels wierd? Duh, of course it is. Clutches wear over time (regardless of how you drive-they wear; period), so your old trucks' clutch probally felt very worn in and smooth. It's a new jeep, how many miles are on it? Seriously, give it some time, if you still don't like it after it breaks in, then you can complain about it, but until then...remember that you're driving a NEW vehicle with a NEW clutch...

You could be right..........I was thinking that I drove my old one so long it became part of my body.
I waited a whole 2 weeks to complain about this one though. I thought after 2 weeks I should have it down, but it seems like it's gotten worse. I'll test drive one today, and if it's the same I'll shut up after I tell you guys that I am an idiot.

Someone already mentioned the ESP or Traction Control probably activating while you are shifting or driving - I'd venture to say that is a portion of what you are experincing and the other being just because it's a new vehicle and your last truck wasn't equipped with TC or ESP...

Definently test out another model from the dealer to verify though... who knows Chrysler could have "missed" something in the quality area at TNAP

In order for my ESP to kick in so that I notice it, the tire have to break free. Like in a slide on a curve, or too much throttle on pull away. I could see it engageing on a burn out attempt, but not just sloppy pedal work.

here's a point i havent seen anyone one else bring up.

we all know theres a learning period, (50 starts) where the computer learns your driving habits and whatever else so it can adjust itself.

when you first get a jeep, who knows what kinda psycho has been driving it before and what the computer learned from them.

i suggest the first thing you do is reset the computer, then go drive like you would normally drive for a little while, perhaps a tad more conservative. then it can tailor itself to you.

i always think i have a very valid point with every post, anyone? how far off base am i?

It's brand new 2007, so it has only learned my bad habits.
I hope after I'm driving better or whatever is the problem it relearns my good habits.

Do you have a manual? I'll let you take a spin on my way out to Moab and see if you still feel the same way (maybe a trip up to St. Elmo). ESP/TC is evil. Turn and give it gas, and it'll dog for sure. Every time it does that and I almost get into an accident, I swear I'm going to trade the KJ in, but I can't afford to trade it yet... Yes, I've mostly driven manuals these past 20 years (really started 5 before that on the farm) from trucks to sports cars. Drive it with a liberal foot and you trigger the TC, and the ESP light doesn't come on for that...
