OK, went out to check the pressure switches as directed...found the low pressure switch (this one)

just sitting there,
not plugged in! Snapped it on and I had ice cold air instantly, compressor came right on! I hooked up the gauge to the low pressure line and it was steady right under 30 psi (now that the compressor is running), at 76 degress ambient temp outside. Perfect! I'll keep an eye on it anyway.
TJKJ2002 and DAVEKJ02, God only knows how much money you guys just saved me in diagnostic costs and replacing parts that work fine - I have zero experience with HVAC systems and I never would have thought to check that the low pressure switch was on, off or faulty. I owe yas a cool one if you ever visit central New York state. I've owned Jeeps for years and belong to numerous forums, and this is by far the best advice I have ever received. Thanks a ton guys. Problem solved,
case closed.

Prime example of what LOST is all about. These guys have saved my butt many times.
