I've only had my Libby for 1 year an '02 with auto, Magna flo muffler , Amsiol from bumper to bumper, ha a K&N air filter replaced with the new Amsoil drop in. new tires last month, had just put in a ScanGuage 1. Whatch the mpg with the scanguage has helped me pull my foot out of the fan. With the new Air filter and guage telling me to drive easier, I havn't figured it yet but before I was getting 13.5 mpg but that was short commute driving in the Denver metro arera. I refill tomorrow and will see if milage has improved. But as of last fill up it was lousy.

I think that has been posted - but a while back
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44372&highlight=quest

The Explorer forums - a guy set a goal of getting 30mpg and he tries a lot of stuff - If you think we have some long threads - this ones currently at 65 pages 1st post was on 02 and it's still active.

Of the points I've seen - the most telling to me - was when he drove a friends Explorer - friend was averaging 18mpg - Aldive got 23 - only change was the driver.

I average 22-24 mpg on my 04 five speed, if I go over 60 mph it starts to drop off to about 20-22 mpg

Yep, I believe different driving habits can make a difference of several miles per gallon. There are a lot of other variables, too, but the one that's in the driver's control most directly is the way he drives. Hard on the pedals = hard on the wallet. :)

Thanks for the welcome ATX. Glad I found this site. LOTS of good info here.

I'm currently rolling in a Blue 2003 Sport (gas) that I picked up a couple of months ago. The only mods so far have been the addition of some BFG 235 70 16 MT's, some seat covers and a 'golf grip' steering wheel cover from Canadian Tire ! I feel that the cover really adds a touch of class and should get me a few extra mpg's .

I figured there would be a trade off in going with the libby, (the festiva gets 36mpg on the highway) and am not that concerned about it. Neither my samurai or my festiva had the options, power, smooth ride, or comfort that the libby offers.

I didn't realize that I was using KPH and MPG until you pointed it out. I'm at that age where I was taught one, then part way through my education, I was partially swapped over to the other. I still say my height in feet and inches instead of cm's and my weight in lbs instead of kg's.

I have 600 miles on my stock '07 KJ sport and I get about 20 mpg (odometer). I drive about 15 miles to and from work with the normal in city driving. I feel this is pretty good as I didn't buy a Jeep for the mpg.

This is why i am postin at 1:20 am and not sleeping lol

Exactly!! the driver and how they drive makes a world of difference. On the road, be very light on the skinny pedal. Don't need to be first to the next red light! Keep speeds below 65 mph, you'll see a huge increase.

I normally average 240 miles per tank at around 16.5 mpgs local & 19-21 mpgs & around 300+ a little per tank on a long straight highway. I just did a tank full being real easy on the skinny pedal, cruise control and coasting where I could and just got 19.2 mpgs on my last tank mixed local & highway. I basically drove by the EVIC!

If your speedo ain't accurate because of larger tires, how you gonna get a good reading on milage?

I have a 2 wheel drive that gets 25 plus on many occassions, 27 a few times, and as low as 16 on others.

The secret is GOOD gas, a bottle of 90 cent STP additive, flat land, proper tire pressure, and 66mph for me

All synthetic,

Keeping spark plugs changed on this beast is a MUST and none work better than the cheap NGK's.

Must be nose down and minimize the space between the top of the tire and fender to cut down on drag.

Oh yeah, I get better milage with a paper filter than K&N drop-in too. All I did was drill the drain holes in the box to 1" to wash bugs out and it breathes a little better.

In the Hills (where I live), No cruise control nor overdrive and 50 mph nets me the best milage.

Believe it or not

I'm giving the 'slow' speeds a try to see if it does help. So far it appears to have worked somewhat. I'm at 315 kms (180 miles for you folks south of the boarder ;) ) and just a half needle under half a tank. I'm still using the cheap 89 octane gas.

I want to try the 94 octane gas next and see how that does. Anyone have any experience higher octane or do you all run the cheapo gas?

run regular, nobody got any benefits when switching to premium, it is only recommended when your towing.

Prior to my KJ I drove a Dodge Dakota '95 5.2L (or 318 cid) 4x4 with automatic I had it tuned for highway I was commuting 30 mile one way from one side of Denver to the other. Anyway If I ran the highest octane it ran great like a scalleded dog. But got less milage but if I stepped down in octane to the midrange it didn't perform as well but got better milage. Don't ask me why but it did. So since jeep says run cheap gas I don't argue I think it runs fine and after all those year with lossy milage of the Dakota I'm happy with what I get.

Whenever you have a true 4x4 system your gonna give up mpg. Unlike a crossover, that lowrange will cost you in weight and drag. All in all, not bad mpg for what we have.

Before I bought my KJ I drove a Toyota Tundra, and one of the reasons I got rid of it was the bad gas milage. My Jeep is only a couple of mpg's better than that thing, and it was a monster. If I wanted good gas milage I would drive a CR-V. But it 's not worth that. I avrage between 14-16, but most of my driving is bumper to bumper city traffic. I have done everything to try to improve it, but nothing works. If I got 25mpg on the highway I would think either something was broken or I made a mistake counting.

Ditto.
It would be nice to get 25 mpg on the highway, but unless my Liberty goes on a major weight diet, I'm not going to be seeing that.

I normally get 210-250 miles on a tank with my normal driving trips. It really blows but Ive learned to live with it and just count it as part of my expenses.....

I just filled up again and recalculated my mpg's after I had taken it easy on the gas pedal. Any and all starts were slow/easy, and I would shift at 2K RPM. Highway speeds were kept between 90-100 Km/h (55-60MPH). The result was an increase from an average of 18 MPG to 23 MPG. This tank was about 25% highway and 75% town. Not too bad. Cheapo gas to boot.

The gas mileage does improve IF you take it easy on the take-offs and highway speeds.
