tip of the month ;) good idea

X2, another great idea.

Thanks.

I feel like this exact same conversation was had about 2 weeks ago... (only I mentioned the bolt stud trick that time. Thank you VW for putting one of those studs in the audi tire change kit).

So what size and thread pitch is this bolt?

Great tip, just not complete.

same as the original bolts.......I could guess but I just dug into my box of hardware till I found one that matched up. You can do the same.

I should have asked Troy.

Yeah. He should know it off the top of his head like everything else. 8)

Related question...

The Corporate 8.25 Rear Axle is not the limited slip deal where I need the extra additive, is it?

Check the right side axle tube (or both sides for that matter) to see if you have a green sticker that says you Have the Trac-lock rear limited slip. If not, it should say "OPEN". Other than that, you might be able to tell by raising the rear up and spinning a tire by hand. If both wheels turn the same direction it probably has the LS. Might also say on your window sticker if you still have it.

If you Do have it, you will need 4-6 ounces (or more if yours chatters) of the LS additive.

Thanks.

I just found my build sheet and it is the corp 8.25, no LS.

Thanks again.

So what's the final word on the Fel-Pro gaskets - can they go on dry and provide a seal? I bought a Fel-pro for my next differential oil change because it was cheap ($4 vs $25 for a Lubelocker with shipping, so I can buy six paper gaskets), and I hoped that the need for RTV removal can be avoided in the future.

I found the answer to my question on the Fel-Pro website:

Vehicles manufactured after 1990 often have axle and differential housings sealed with RTV. Over time, extreme vehicle vibration, even rough roads, can cause the RTV bead to break. If the bead breaks and the vehicle loses the axle lube, the transmission gears begin to rub and wear.

Fel-Pro® axle and differential replacement gaskets are precut for these applications. You don’t have to worry about applying an RTV and waiting for it to set up to seal. In addition, installing precut Fel-Pro gaskets helps eliminate the risk of contaminating the differential housing with RTV. That contamination can happen for a number of reasons, two of the most common being the difficulty of running a consistent sealing bead, and the possible extrusion of the RTV in or out of the housing by tightening the housing cover, or even breaking the bead.

Fel-Pro replacement precut gaskets eliminate the need for RTV.

I changed my rear diff oil yesterday and used a $4 FelPro gasket. Cleaned off all the RTV and put the gasket on dry. It was very easy to do and no leaks!
