I know I'll get s**t for this, but do you really have nothing positive to say (tjkj)? This might get me banned, but I wouldn't shoot down everything someone says. Looks like me and one other poster so far.

Anyway, I should NOT have suggested the PulsePlugs, as I am no expert. So for that, my apologies. I thought it was a thread about spark plugs.

TJKJ: Yes, I know you are pretty much King here. Don't worry, I know my place.

OK watch I will get into trouble for this BUT

Don't think its not having anything positive to say but lots of times its what has been seen to work and work great over a long period of time. I like TJKJ and alot of other people on here have been playing with 4 WDs for years so sometimes we may come across as being short but after you have heard the same things over and over here and on the job, you do cut to the chase and say this works , this does not, or at least I do.
You can post your findings as well on anything so don't be afraid to, sometimes we all may agree , sometimes none of us will agree on anything

Tom
I have use Autolite for years and no problems , have seen new and improved ones come and go like new car models, here one year gone the next

tjkj2002 doesn't need me to defend him but I can tell you that he spends a lot of his spare time helping others on here. He's very smart and although he often plays devil's advocate on here, he does it to make sure people don't make expensive (or dangerous) mistakes. If he bought a TJ instead of a KJ, I don't think this community would be as "rich". :D

i've always used autolites up until my last change. i went to take the plugs out and found that the nut around the plug had broken into 5-6 pieces. took 4 hours to get it out. i wound up putting NGKs in out of fear it would happen again. this ever happen to anyone with autolites?

You guys got the part # for the Autolite Plats? I'm changing the oil/filter this weekend. This would just give me another reason to pick up a 6pack for when the work is done.

Found it: AP5224 That's the one at AutoZone. What should the gap be set at for the 3.7 V6?

Gap varies. It should be posted on a label under the hood for your KJ.

As for domestic plugs in domestic vehicles, that is a bunch of poop. Denso is second to no one in the auto ignition market. And that comes from a guy who has built, raced and owned Chevy's most of his life. Which leads me to, AC Delco makes garbage when it comes to plugs. But for the record, I know I have Denso's in there now but I have no issues using Autolites. They're excellent plugs too.

You need a special gapper to set the gap on platinum plugs, plastic or composite gapper is needed so you do not ruin the platinum tips. The correct gap is noted on the emissions sticker on the top radiator support in your engine bay.

Thanks for the tip! Can we get one of these gappers at the parts store or is this something we would need to order special?

Never seen one at a advance auto,CarQwest or Napa may have them, don't let the less then knowledgeable people that work at advance auto, auto zone,or checkers tell you that you can use a normal gapper either.I bought mine off the Snap-on truck.

You can't gap those plugs anyway, you just hope they are gapped correctly from the factory.

I never knew that about plats needing a special gap tool. Thanx for the heads up. I only asked about the size of the gap just to cover everything. I've actually been lucky enough not to need to gap a set of plugs on either of the vehicles I've owned.

No, never. How old were the plugs, and I wonder if they were over tightened?

they were in for less than 10k miles. i've never had this happen before - i always make sure not to overtighten them... ive heard too many horror stories.

in 99 i had an autolite do that to me and I ended up having to pull the head to get a piece that fell in, i called autolites CS and they asked me to send the plug and it's pieces in, they reimbursed me for the cost of 8 plugs, and the amount of labor for removal and reinstallation of the head, plus the cost of the gaskets without me even giving them any receipts, i think all they did was look up the parts via GM and look at a labor book for the labor hours / rate

I had a splitfire do it as well when they first came out and they said there was no way their fabulously alien technology product would do that through any manufacturing defect that I must have used a chisel and hammer to seat and tighten the plug or something along that line

if you're confident that you didn't over tighten the plug, then it can probably be attributed to one of those 1 in a million defects that can happen with just about any mass produced product

the only other thing i can think that could cause such failure would be a prefracture in the plug which caused a shatter if the plug was hot and got rapidly cooled or something via water fording, deep water splash or a car wash but again, it would be one of those 1 in however-many's that occur

For anyone interested in avoiding possible confusion, here is a run down on Autolite plugs for the 3.7 & 2.4 gas engine Jeep Liberty. Be sure to choose the right engine and model year from this list. I only did Autolite due to the popularity of using this brand plug. If it helps one person, great.

3.7 engine. 2002 - 2004

Autolite:
# 3923 - Resistor.
# AP3923 - Platinum. (gap to required specs).
# APP3923 - Double Platinum.
#XP3923 - Iridium.

All Autolite plugs are set @ .035 gap out of the box.

Autolite:
#5224 - Resistor Plug.
#AP5224 - Platinum.

2.4 engine. 2002 - 2005

2.4 engine Autolite plugs are set @ .040 gap (O.E style) out of the box.
