What we are seeing in the Australian press today is that Obama has given Chrysler 30 days to finalise a 'merger' with Fiat.

Does this mean we'll be able to buy Jeeps with Ferrari engines?

probably a 1.6 with a turbo

the prior details specifically said something about Fiat's small engines and drivetrains

i'd imagine wed all be gearing back to high 4's low 5's with that setup

Just out of curiousity when did the goverment start making judgement calls of things that effect the people without even asking those people what it is that they want ?????

As I see it, we the taxpayers now own stock in GM and Chrysler. I paid my taxes to help them survive so I want a share in the profits.

Regardless, I never hear anything about slamming the oil industry. They caused a major part in all this. Cranking up gas prices to get major record profits while hammering the auto industry while the economy was already hurting. They will be eating crow soon enough though. With the focus on alternative fuels coming, they will lose sales quickly. They bit the hand that feeds them, now they need to pay for the bite and our government is helping.

As long as there is a plan to exit after the payoff, I am good with this situation. I would have preferred we not give any of them a dime but since that is too late, I want them controlled.

"General Motors' chief executive, Richard Wagoner, must go, the administration said, workers must make concessions and Chrysler must pursue a merger with Italian automaker Fiat SpA if more government help is to be considered."

Even with a merger this doesn't mean Chrysler's will have Italian motors.

In a perfect world, an American businessman would buy Jeep as sole enterprise and save the American Icon much like Steve Jobs did with Apple Computer and Willie G. Davidson with Harley Davidson motorcycles. Too bad this world is not perfect.

All you people who are howling about socialism need to understand what is at stake here. If these major American industries collapse the ripple effect in the economy will be awful. Not only will GM and Chrysler (and therefore Jeep) go under but hundreds of other companies that are dependent on them will fall as well. This will mean the loss of hundreds of thousands more jobs and with them more businesses....and more jobs ...and so on. This is what happened in the 1930's and it can happen again.

I don't think we are arguing that point but we can be nervous about the national government getting involved with running corporations. :?

Well - I'm certain the Politicians are listening to the best Harvard economists as they work this deal.......

I'm just afraid the economists are there because they couldn't hold a real job.

It's no more wrong than the fact that they dug themselves a hole, and need to be partially owned by the government's money borrowed from China to dig them out of it.

Does it suck?

Yes. Undoubtedly.

Is it "Wrong"? No more wrong than them being so shortsighted...

experience comes from the hospital i was in at rammstein germany

apparently i was very cranky, and very drugged and said something about her wiskers and she wacked me on the head with the clipboard

all the other nurses were wisker free and absolute dolls
