Umm, no, if the engine is just sitting around you cannot tell how many miles were on the Jeep it came out of.

Not sure but if the computer is with it a dealer MIGHT be able to see how many hours are on it but Im just guessing there.

I agree with the others that the price is high for the mileage and warranty....an Auto Zone long block carries a three year warranty....others up to a 7yr, 100,000 mile warranty

I know you are in a real mess but take the time to check this whole engine thing out very carefully. So long as the rest of your Jeep is in good shape an engine swap is worth it to miss the five years of new payments. Call the dealer, parts houses and rebuilders yourself and compare price and warranty and don't let the shop guys stampede you. This is a big deal...take the time to check it out

It may be worth renting a truck and tow dolly from Uhaul. Big city shops and junk yards have stiff prices. You will be amazed how much you can save getting out of the big city. It will save you on both the engine and labor. I saw a big yard near Allentown,PA but can't remember the name, they could save you a bunch.

Good luck

I'm back. Put new(used) motor in. Paid $2,500.00 for motor and install. Engine seems to run fine but I now have a check engine light and 3 codes.
0158, 0161 and 1494. First two are o2 sensors (Bank 2 sensor 2 I think). 1494 has something to do with an evap pump leak or fault. Searching on the web I have found it could be more than just the sensors.
Any body been thru these codes? Shop is going to look into but I don't want to replace everything and still get light. I don't get the feeling he's real good with diagnostics. I guess well see after he takes back to address
Also noticed while checking things that I have ANOTHER torn CV boot and torn lower ball joint boot. Just call me Lucky. I must have done some bad stuff in my last life. Any help would be appreciated as always

Since I dont have the time or knowledge to do myself, labor is a big part of costs for me.
I have not talked in real detail on price, seemed high for me. I put some calls out today to other shops to compare.
Shop its at now claims they will only get used motor from a couple of his usual suppliers that he trusts. He originally said around 3K but because of the engine price it would be more like 3,9K. I have not asked about rebuilt or new short block and heads(I would guess the labor end would make that higher).
I hate these decisions and I did not win lottery tonight.
Keep thoughts commin

Man $2500 is not such a bad deal. My engine crapped out last year on December 29 (both heads cracked and the block was warped...) with about 86000km on it. Dealer first didn't want to do it under warranty as they didn't like the look of my maintenance records. They were telling me a new engine and install was in the neighborhood of 19-20 000. Labour rates here are ridiculous though. Fought em tooth and nail and finally got them to do it under warranty, still took them over 3 months to do it though.
