I would also check local independant dealers, ones that are not joined to a chain. I got some wild quotes from goodyear firestone and sam's club
all these are 4 four tires in 245/70R16 mounted balanced and with all fees except state sales tax

Sam's - BFG long trail T/A Tour $548.98 and they would not mount 245's for me so I would have had to take 225's at $532.98 if I bought there.

Firestone - destination AT $647.50
REVO2 $748.86

GoodYear - Dunlop Rover AT 589.75

Then I started looking at non chain places that have lower overhead or move lots of tires and the brands they sell

Locust Point service - Cooper Discover ATR $576.00 plus there was a $75 mail in rebate on 4 tires at the time

Buyer's Tires. Dover PA - Hercules Terra Trac AT $510.00 out the door sales tax included, No mail in rebate to wait for and they are 60k tires like the others. I bought them and so far I could not be happier.

Thanks guys. I'm still looking for the tire that I have a image of in my head. After 30 years of farting around in the Nevada desert, I formulated a tire that is half way between the Dunlop Rover M/T Maxx and the Dunlop Rover RVXT. The block pattern on the MAXX looks great but I would rather have a rounder shoulder like in the RVXT. I would rather stay away from a 10 ply(E) tire. My rear end and my wife( don't mean to group them together) aren't as tough as we use to be.

Yup, they do. But anything works on Nevada/Utah rock that's like sand paper. You can almost go straight up! When my stock Goodyear's wear out, I'll be looking for something along the lines of a blocky A/T with a round profile for traction in sand and rocks. Do you have any suggestions?

I’m still rolling my stockers, but I do have a second set of toyo open country A/T’s mounted on a 15” rim that I really like on-road and off-road. You also might check out the Dura Trac’s by Goodyear, I’ve heard nothing but good reviews on them as well.

Ding, ding, ding, ding! We have a winner! Or at least a contender. Toyo Open Country A/T's! Thanks, dieselenthusiast!

You'll love them, especially on your desert terrain. They also have good sidewall shoulder tread.
