I found out a few days ago that a local guy has 80 gallons of recycled oil filtered down to 2 microns. He would have been willing to spare me all that I needed.
Had I known that I wouldn't be in this whole nightmare right now.

Just get some cheap 5w30 and a cheap filter and be done with it. Easy to change yourself. Certainly this can be done for $20 several times a year.

With recycled oil it could be a ton of different weights, could be broken down from heat, etc etc. Sounds like a horrible idea.

If you can't afford regular standard maintenance then you shouldn't be driving it. Oil should be your first priority on your vehicle, not your last.

My dad could have atleast helped me out. He knew I didnt have money or a job when he gave the jeep to me. He also knew that the jeep wasn't easy on maintenance seeing as hit had almost 100k when I was given it.
My mom also could have helped me. She could loan my bro money for car insurance when he was out of his job but she couldn't have loaned me $20 for some oil....

My family is so caring sometimes.... :?

It was you who decided you had to drive it with the oil light on and not enough oil in it. There are always other options and choices even if you may not have liked them at the time. I realize you are still young but part of growing up is about learning to make good responsible choices and being accountable for what happens when you make bad choices. Don't blame others... if thats what your are going to do then you haven't learned much from this.

putting in used oil would have been better than no oil yes but its late for that.... It's time to find a way to get the Jeep repaired or traded it off for something else.

fat fingered something....

continued
these days. Parked at the local Lowes and when I came out it would not start but I kept trying. Checked oil level and not even on stick. took about 2.5 qts but it was to late. I looked and called around for a while. Found a motor at a local junkyard and they installed it also. Motor was 1900 and 650 to install. They claim it had 42k. Iy wasn't the best install Ive seen but I have been abl to work out the bugs with the installer. Evidently its a somewhat common thing as the motor was not easy to get and I had alot of higher prices before I found this guy. Up to 4K for used motor and higher for reman.
Good luck
PS Im 43 and have had many vehicles and never blew on up before this that I wasnt trying to.

Come on now, most of us have to actually BUY our own vehicles, we don't get them gave to us! Don't get me started on what my first 50 dollar car was back in 1970 !

You have had it made in the shade, time to man up, say I screwed up and move on! Geez!

O.K., people. Time to ease up and back off. The young man obviously has parents that love him and want to help him the best they can. We (my wife and I) were helped in the same way until we got on our feet, both families gave us their old cars, and we help our kids the same way...it's what parents do. From this and the other site it's obvious to me Budke is doing the best he can. He needs our help, not our criticism.
So, that said, how can we help him? If the KJ is his dd and only way to work he needs it running asap. It sounds like his folks are trying to help him through this (as parents do), so what's the quickest, cheapest thing he can do to keep his KJ, since that's what he wants to do, and as a group that's what this site should work on. We love our Jeeps and he loves his. He asked for our help, let's give it to him...that's what this site is about.

Agreed
But no more whining and trying to blame other people. He is so lucky to have a KJ given to him as a first car. My first car in 1991 was a 1976 Dodge Aspen that was my grandfather's at one time. It was red with white top, one tan fender and a fair amount of bondo. I hated that car and would rather had something atleast from the 80's then but I learned how to take care of it from my grand father. it looked like this

THANK YOU!!!

I know I have it rather easy compared to some others that I know. Yes, I was given this car and I'm lucky it was given to me. I was going to be given a 1992 Audi 100. They didn't give me that because one, that thing was really hard to find parts for, and the parts were reallllyyyyy expensive, and they had the kj paid off and I worked hard in school so they gave it to me.
I know I screwed up hardcore, and I'm not dwelling on it. I am manning up and moving on. When I have time I have been calling around for engines and labor quotes, and I've been combing the internet for a good priced engine. Its hard getting this done when you work overnight at walmart and have only gotten 2 paychecks. So I still have like no money. But I will get this done, with my parents help or not. Yes, it would be LOADS of help to have them help me get this done, but if they won't, well then I guess I'm on my own in this exciting little adventure.

FYI, some places will finance new/rebuilt engines. This could help build your credit if you stay on top of payments.

Budke, hey sorry to hear about the whole deal, can't say I have been there, but years ago I had the parents help me get my car safe and on the road until I put it into a tree. Now I know you are tight for cash, have you looked for any salvage KJs that have rear end damage only and otherwise a good drivetrain where you could purchase engine? Also do you have any mechanically inclined friends or live by any LOST members? I am semi mechanically inclined ( shop class in high school and some work over the years on my own vehicles) and I just helped a buddy fully swap his engine/tranny in his late model chevy pick up with all the computer doodads. Alot of the work was just marking all the wires to put back correctly and buying the correct sensors/gaskets one would buy when doing a swap. And aside from the factory crate engine having a rear oil pan leak (not our fault and being fixed by dealer), we were 100% successful. He did purchase/had (but you could rent/borrow) an engine hoist, jackstands, creeper, heavy duty jack etc. I guess what I am trying to say is that this may look really scary and daunting, but with a Hanes manual, new fluids and a friend or two, this can be done. I know now from the experience with my friend, I think I would tackle an engine swap if I had to. Just take it a step at a time, keep your internet up and running and you can be on the road again. Good luck bro.

"Car-Parts.com" is a good place to look for eng. I just looked there a a few 02 /3.7eng. around 2,000. I looked under 04 /3.7eng. there are quite a few more around 1,200 to 1,500. I would think you could make the 04 work , prob. have to swap intake, sensor's, exhaust manifold's or somthing. Get a couple friend's a haynes book, some BEER and do it you'r self !!! Eng. swap's arn't that diff. just don't get overwelmed and take your time !!!

'04 engine won't work. It has the 42RLE tranny. They changed the crank and the location of the crank/cam position sensor so It would't work. Its going to have to be an engine that came with the 45RFE.
Tomorrow I'm going to call around a few local salvage yards and such ad see what they have.

Now thats more of what I like to see instead of the world is against me!
Keep up that attitude and people will be more willing to help you out.

I know some think maybe I was getting on your case too much, it is more of me trying to get you to stand up and take into account what you have, what you have been given and what you can do.

If you sit along side of the road and complain all day no one is going to pay any attention after a while!
