This is just an extract from a post of mine on another forum about snorkels.. It outlines the concept of dust elimination..

I think everybody kinda wants a snorkel that looks like those TJM ones with the intake being real close to the body.. but really that actually defeates the dust elimination feature of the snorkels intake, and only make the snorkel a water barrier. I personally did not get a snorkel for water crossings, as I dont really want to drive in water that deep, I wanted it for touring and dust elimination, with the added benifit of water crossing as a seconary benefit, should I ever be forced into deep water.
Those snorkels with the intake right against the body draw in air that has run along the front end of the vehicle. As you drive and the dust hits the front of the car, it slipstreams up and along the panels of the vehicle and condenses with the dust that is hitting that part of the panel (and so on), and with the intake feeding off this slipstream, it funnels dirt and dust into the snorkel and thus your airbox, engine.
The reanson the Airflow snorkel has the intake hat pushed up and away from the body is to get the intake out of this slipstream of dirty air, and makes it so as its pulling in clean air. Its a design feature, I understand the more pleasing lines of the snorkel that contures to the body, Nobody can say they dont look good, and ifs that why you want that style, "Just for looks" thats fine, but, if you want a snorkel for what it is designed to do, and to do it properly, it has to look the way it looks.
Hope they get it out in the market soon, but, dont forget about the guys that made one first, it only because of them that ARB now see the KJ as a viable sales raiser, after 8 years of snubbing their nose and the KJ being discontinued, remember Airflow, did answer our pleas for the snorkel first, and whilst I hear some complain of the finish of the Airflow, I've also seen some Safari snorkels models, that feel like they are made from icecream container thin plastic, very flimsy indeed..
Good that there is a little vaiety out there though, and a wider availability for KJs to get a snorkel supplied and fitted
