I've had a Wrangler and my Liberty, and the Liberty fits me better because I can use it to get to work (comfortably), go wheeling, and go to the mall. I broke the decision down into Wheeling, Safety, Price, and Comfort:
Wheeling: So far, I've been able to handle everything any friends that I wheel with have done in their Blazers/trucks/XJ's/Wranglers. Now, I'm sure that there is a lot of stuff out there that takes a more capable rig, I just haven't needed one, and Arizona has some gnarly stuff. Sure the Unlimited/Rubi has more capability... I just haven't needed it that often.
Safety: Yeah, I was a little paranoid after my bro got in a bad accident. I started looking at the sheet metal with handles on it and got a little nervous- lots of bad drivers out there.
Price: I bought my '02 in '03 for $16K- a lot less than newer Wranglers.
Comfort: I spend an hour a day minimum commuting on a highway. The Wrangler's soft top drove me crazy as it began to wear out. Also, I rode in a Rubi when my Jeep was in the diff shop, and I was very suprised at how much rougher the ride was- I've been way too used to the KJ's suspension. Also, the room in the KJ is niiiiiice. I couldn't really go to the grocery store in my TJ without taking out the back seat; I went camping with some friends, and his TJ was about to explode with coolers and camping gear that would have fit nicely right behind the back seat in the KJ.
Ok, thats it from me.... I like them both- the KJ makes a great daily driver you can wheel with; the Wrangler is a great Wheeler that you can drive daily....
