I think the dealer is full of bull. How in the heck is the speedo hooked the rear end? Even if it was, the Jeep still should be able to cross some water. Do you have water in anything else, tranny, front diff, transfer case? If not then there was probably somthin wrong from the get-go with the rear end.

First go to a Jeep only Dealership. Your just another car owner there. Do remember the Owners manual says you can ford 20" of water thats about the level of the bummpers.
I took my TJ to the Jeep Dealer I bought it from. Several of their sales people had joined our Jeep Club. THe tranny went. There was no arguing that I had been in the water. They warrantied it w/o a problem. Now as far as water in your rear diff. If you do go in water you need to be checking certain parts and making sure you get the water out.
My Advice take it somewhere else, or call the regional rep.

Edwin, AFAIK the speed sensor is built into the top of the rear diff and monitors the rotations of the ring gear. However, I don't think water in the diff would hurt it.. the diffs allready full of oil, so why would water hurt the sensor (though obviously it's not good for the gears themselves).

I agree with jeepmed, however... You need to call the DC/Jeep zone office in your area. I urge you to do this ASAP! Generally these people are on your side. The zone rep will instruct you what to do next by what info you've supplied him/her.

You can mention your uneasy feelings (if you have any?) towards the dealership you've been dealing with. The zone rep should either instruct you to take it back there or to another dealer.

At least that's the way it worked with GM (Chevy) several years ago for me. The games stopped once the zone rep walked into the service department to inspect my car.

I just sat here and read all this wondering what dealer you were talking about...Power is one of the worst to deal with service-wise! Auto-nation dealers are not known to have the greatest/ most honorable service departments. It might be to late to go elsewhere, but if you can I strongly recommend MOORE Chrysler Jeep on 83rd AVE & Bell. Get a second opinion from them...make an appiontment with Dion, he is a service advisor. They just replace my starter and tranny under warranty no issues what-so-ever. Luke is the service manager there, he usually does the test drives with you to see what problems you are expiriencing. Dont tell them what Power tried to do to you though...see what they say first.
If it is too late to get a second opinion then definetly go to the source...complain to DC. I hope something works out for you! If you want MOORE's phone number here it is (623)972-6004. Keep us informed. There are so few honest service departments, I used to cringe everytime I had to go get service until I found them. Power may have notated your screen already though. Sorry to chime in so late wish I would have seen this earlier!

I just wanted to post that at the Jeep Site > Jeep Life > 4X4 101 > Trail Rated Challenge, it states you should never cross more than 18" - 20" inches of water. In another section of the Challenge, it states you should back out of a water crossing if the water gets just below your KJ's headlights.

It also states a disclaimer at the bottom:

"Traversing deep water can cause damage, which voids the vehicle warrenty. Always off-road responsibly in approved areas".

So what's a Jeep Owner to think? Other than that's F.U.B.A.R!!!

After reading all of this the tech in your case does not know what he/she is doing, here is why:

1, This is the 6th time in for this and they just now thought to check your gear oil?

2, If a speedo problem occurs, the diagnostic will tell them specifically if there is a faulty guage or a communication problem between the speedo and the sensor on the rear diff. (2 different codes at least for the 02's)

3, If they are going to say it will cost that much to fix, and water caused the problem, make them show you the dirty/water in fluid, rust on your tone ring, and most importantly where the water caused the short to ruin the sensor head. If the damage is to the part of the sensor head that is mounted on the outside on top of the diff housing, then easily just driving down I-5 in Seattle in January could do the same damage as if you parked in a low creek!!

If they do not agree to #3 then be sure to tell regional rep, talk to a manager etc.. It is warranty, they must prove their hypothesis before they can automatically say it is not covered...

Sorry for the rant, hopefully you can use some of the info I did give out.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but if the speedo is signalled from a sensor that keeps track of the gears in the diff, then why would we all have to have the computer reprogrammed for larger tires? The gears didn't change, just the circumference of the tires. I thought the speedo was connected to sensors at the wheels (especially for those with ABS).

The gears are still spinning at the same speed and the tires are still spinning at the same speed, but since the circumference of the tire is larger one full rotation now moves you further forward than it did with stock tires.

Thanks all for your info and input. I have called the dealer 2 days in a row asking to have the District Manager contact me. Now it is the thrid day and still no call from the DM. Also, calling Chrylser Hqs gets no where. They don't even know who the DM's are. At least that is what they told me. They also told me to call the dealer back.

Hi all,
I had good news today. Chrysler Corporation just called me and they are issuing me a check for $1250.00 the cost of the repairs. They spoke with their technical people and they realized there was nothing in the owners manual about fording water, etc. AS I said before I never crossed streams, etc. Just rain water during our monsoons.
They have restored my faith in Chrysler. I sent a letter to the president of Chrysler. It PAYS to voice your concerns.
