Man...

You guys had me worried there...

So with my elite Excel skills I came up with the following numbers...

Largest fillup was 70 L (18.5 US gal for you Imperial buggers... ;) ) and I probably had some driving left in the tank...
I drove about 530 KM on that 70 L (Conversion is just under 330 mi )

A little more math trickery and I come up with 17.8 mpg....
Now that was some highway driving, some city/country and more than a few hours of 4x4 driving as well so all in all not too bad...

I have a camping trip coming up this weekend so we'll see just how good it gets... although i'll be weighted down with a bunch of gear... :)

Mileage be damned... by next Spring I want to be Frankenlifted... :D

The day after I lifted mine I took a trip to the other side of the state, very hilly down there (southeastern part of Ohio) but averaged about 20.2 for the trip. Now with the ARB on now not sure what it will do but I did run CC as much as possible and about 67/68 on the big road. Going down again in a couple of weeks will get some more numbers then. I had gotten about 3/4 mpg better before the lift running over 72/75 most of the way. I know the lift kills the mileage but IT IS A JEEP with 4 wheel drive so I know it will not ever get 30 MPGs , never thought that it would when I bought it. No matter how high the price of gas, I have never and will never drive one of those little cars.

Just courious of how far you can roll a gasser on a tank of fuel? I hear a lot of very optimistic fuel mileages for both the gasser and the CRD, never seem to achieve the numbers. My stock height CRD is good for @ 450 miles on the highway, leaving @ 1/8 tank. Roughly 26 mpg (max) if I behave myself.

I'm right at about 330 miles on this tank, and my low-fuel light came on about 5 miles ago. I figure I have about 30-40 more miles in the tank, but I'll refuel well before then. When I got to work this morning, the EVIC said 19.2 MPG.

Since mid-May, I've been averaging 18.5-19 in mixed driving. Before then, I was getting about 17.5. One thing I have noticed is that 89 octane seems to make it easier for me to get higher MPG than 87--that is, with 87 octane, I have to be very conscientious about my driving, and if driving circumstances knock my milage down to 17, I usually have no chance of getting up to 18. With 89, if my MPG dips down to 17, I can usually get back to a high 18.something fairly quickly.

Whether the MPG difference is worth the extra 10 cents per gallon is yet to be confirmed; gas prices are fluctuating too much for my calculations to be meaningful in the short time I've had my Jeep.

However, I didn't start experimenting with 89 octane until just before mid-May, so "summer blend" might be the difference. I have noticed that if I run a tank of 89, then a tank of 87, that second tank seems to do fairly well, but another tank of 87 after that starts to show a milage decrease. I haven't tried a third tank-in-a-row of 87 after one of 89 yet, but may do that later.

As far as someone saying they wished to get close to the mileage reported by Jeep well I never look at that because they can pretty much fiqure it the way they want to no matter what the government says. I just looked at my sticker that came on mine and it says 17 city and 21 highway like Moose said, so I am right at that with the lift on. As far as being a daily driver I suppose mine is with over 56000 in 20 months time. Plus it is the only 4 wheel vehicle we have.
It comes down to you have to pay to play, For example, I have owned Harleys since 1977, now if I wanted something with great gas mileage on two wheels I would not own one of them, I would own one of those from a company across the big pond, no come to think of it would rather walk than own one of them, but... The point is if you want great mileage you do not buy a 4X4, or any truck etc. You buy a cute little car and be done with it. Myself I will pay the price because I want what I want and am willing to pay the extra. Now for something else, start thinking how much more you are paying for insurance over that of a cute little SAFE car!

I bought mine as a highway runner to get through the snow (50 miles each way into Cleveland). Fuel mileage is important but secondary to the traction (and the extra weight of the CRD is a big plus in the snow). I have a more efficient car for better weather. I do tend use the CRD more often than I expected in good weather, probably more than had I bought a gasser. One thing I didn't factor in was mine sucks motor oil badly and not uncommon to use 1/2 qt ($5/qt synthetic) on a tank of fuel. I have been screaming about this but Jeep keeps claiming it's "normal" along with some other CRD nuisance mechanical issues.

I was somewhat disappointed with the fuel economy of my 2003 Renegade when compared with my '93 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 liter. I was getting 16 to 17 mpg around town in my Liberty. My fuel economy has increased, particularly in the warm weather. I am averaging over 19 mpg, with some individual mpg of over 21. The real irritation for me is that with the small fuel tank, I fill up every couple of days. On some longer trips, I have had to fill up twice in the same day. My old Cherokee could travel up to 420 miles on a tank due to the large tank and fuel economy in the low 20's. The Liberty Renegade is just too un-aero-dynamic and has a fuel tank that is too small.

I don't think any of us bought these things because they were great on gas mileage. If you can average 17 in town and 21 on a trip (3.7L) that has to be good for a vehicle with the weight of a boulder and aerodynamics of a brick........and then if you got mods like a lift and bigger tires - well I guess it's the price of fun.

We took a trip in my girlfriends Cutlass which has a V-6 of approximately the same size and horsepower but much more aerodynamic (and of course it is geared differently) and although we had it packed solid with crap we got 29.2 mpg - mostly highway - and we were moving. There's nothing wrong with her Cutlass - it's a nice car - But the KJ is more fun to drive in my opinion.

So.... when you think of it the guys with the CRD have the best of both worlds if they can get near 29 mpg on the highway. You can't get a CRD in NY or I'd have one.

As a p. s. - - if we all had itsy bitsy econo boxes this would be the the itsy-bitsy-no-fun-to-drive-econo-box-forum - - - -and there wouldn't be anyone here. This is a GOOD FORUM and I LOVE my JEEP in spite of the gas mileage............

I just drove my Liberty from Martinez, CA to Kernersville, NC. I was averaging between 23 - 25 (gotta love that EVIC!) mpg until I got to Kansas. The winds were blowing so hard through Kansas and Missouri that it destroyed my mileage. Ended up with an average of 21.8 for the whole trip - approximately 2825 miles. I was kinda bummed because is was so good and I was only filling up once a day until then. Overall, though, I thought the KJ did a great job on the trip.

Don't get my wrong. I thoroughly enjoy my Liberty Renegade, and no, I didn't buy it for it's fuel efficiency; but it just seems to me that in the ten years between my 1993 Grand Cherokee (which was a larger vehicle) and my Liberty, some improvement in fuel economy should have been realized. It actually has WORSE fuel economy than the older vehicle. It wouldn't bother me so much if the fuel tank was larger allowing me to drive more that 300 miles between fill-ups.

DARN IT! I typed a really long and detailed explanation and history and it didn't post for some reason.

Short version:

stock: 13.5 avg, 18.5 best (pure highway at 73mph)
lifted and 31" tires: 12.9 avg, 16.3 best (same as above)

So I win, right? Or do I lose! freakin gas prices!!!

But I LOVE my KJ!
