Maybe it'll get soccer moms outta the Libby and more off-road attention brought to it. That's the only silver lining I can find.

Compass will be built along side the new Dodge Caliber in Illinois. It's meant to be something like a rally car or crossover vehicle. Think of it as something to compete with a Subaru.

hillcountryKJ ... I mostly agree that Compass doesn't make of a good Jeep; however, where do you put it then. While not a perfect Jeep, it's a good idea for DCX to use the platform for more than one vehicle. Makes you wish Plymouth was still a round or better yet, the old Eagle brand. With no Eagle anymore, the closest thing DCX has is Jeep.

The "Compass" looks like a "Cherokee", but they just changed the front lights like most people wanted.

But I think the "Rescue" looks the most like a new "Liberty".

At the risk of having stones thrown at me (again), is the Compass any less a Jeep because of its AWD car platform than a 2wd Liberty or Grand?

No stones to throw. I would however point out that a 2wd Liberty/Grand would not be the best off-roader, but would clear a stone or 2 with the ground clearance they have. Compass probably won't have to clearance to take on a stone thrown in front of it. I do think Compass would be fun to drive on a dirt road or track.

I got news for you, if this gas thing doesn't change (and it appears it will only get worse the next 12 months), the auto mfg's won't be building squat on a SUV platform. So hang onto your KJ's, they just night become classic Jeep's.

The Compass looks like a Pontiac Vibe with Hella lights.

Yeah. The original Compass concept with the spare tire on the hatch was something really original. Maybe it'll look a lot better in the flesh but I'm a bit disappointed.

It's a pity all the manufacturers are going to this platform-based thing. So many vehicles look the same these days.

I'm trying to see how the Patriot is considered any different in size than the Liberty. They look almost the same to me, except for the Liberty having more head room.

Well, at least the Patriot has tow hooks.

I dunno...I think they both look pretty cool, for what they are. I don't understand the low-profile tires, though. Why does everything have to look like a Japanese vehicle? I guess they want to appeal to the 20-something crowd.

If I got a Patriot I'd be inclined to pull those 17" rims off and install some 15" rock crawlers...if the brake calipers aren't in the way.

Summarizing what I've seen in media materials (to avoid any copyright infringement or other such legal issues  ), the Patriot and Compass are both likely to see production in 08/09.

The Patriot is being built so that it is CAPABLE of being trail-rated (IOW, probably a small number of 4WD models built, but most will be FWD/AWD).

Compass will be FWD/AWD WRX-style crossover built on same platform as Neon replacement Dodge Caliber.

------

Yes, the Compass, Patriot and Liberty are all similar in size. Rumors circled for a while that the KJ was going away, but Jeep has confirmed it will add TWO new entry-level Jeeps below the Wrangler's price point over the next few years. Since DCX has acknowledged in its press releases and other materials that the KJ appeals to more women than men, I'd personally expect them to invest in the PATRIOT's 4WD capability and market the KJ more as a mall-wheeler. We'll see ...
