::low whistle:: That's a bit pricey for just a block and some computers (since that's the most i'll be taking out of them) I'd like to find something wrecked maybe, if not, then just a new short block and the necessary electronics. I appreciate the help though.

You can get a remanufactured 4.7 long block for $3k. You're going to need the heads anyway. Plus, it would get you going a lot quicker and cheaper than going all out at first. If you need sponsers to help you with your project, you'll have to prove yourself to them first. Otherwise, they look at you as someone who has been able to sit through the Fast and the Furious more than once.

Hmm. I was trying to avoid going the long-block route considering i'll be replacing the pistons, rods, crank, etc, etc. But i guess i'd have to have heads in order to port them, so i might as well just buy the whole thing. Will the 3.7 accessory drive bolt up to the 4.7? If so, that's one less thing i have to worry about.

How do i go about proving myself to sponsors exactly?

I just don't think sponsers are going to line up to donate parts, labor, and knowledge, so you can learn to build show vehicles. On the other hand, someone after their first semester learning about cars that is the first to put a V8 in a Libby might get some interest. If you can actually pick up the sponsers for this expensive of a project, go crazy. I would if I had sponsers. But this stuff is really expensive on your own. I consider myself lucky. My most expensive quarter mile so far was only around $5k. Off roading can be much more costly than that also when talking about the type of rig that you are. Even as just a show vehicle that smashes a car every once in a while, you can still cause some serious damage. Please don't think of this as being too negative. I want you to build your dream Jeep. I just think you might need a Plan B in case you can't get the sponsers. That way you can still build your Jeep while you have the school's extra resources.

Yeah, i kinda figured that at least the engine part would come out of pocket, but don't get me wrong here, i definately do not intend to build a trailer queen. There's no point in me spending all that money to upgrade it if i'm not going to wheel it. It's gonna be a full service Jeep, and i'll drive it just as hard as i do now, or harder.

Ohh, this is gonna get interesting. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this thread. I've been waiting on SOMEONE to do a 4.7L swap for a while just to see it done!

Good LUCK!!!! :D

Also, thanks for the knowledge about the TCM location/transmission type... I didn't know that!

Since there's no TCM in the JTEC PCM, wouldn't that mean all JTEC Libertys have a seperate TCM on the other side? Do all Libertys with the JTEC controller have the 45RFE? :?

I was under the impression they moved from the JTEC at the same time as they went to the 42RLE. Some people with '03s need to check their transmissions and computers so we know for sure.

Ok, so i've now got this job at a collision shop. Today i just so happened to work on a Dodge Durango that has about 130K on it, but still runs. Unfortunately, due to the damage, it looks like it's gonna be totaled. But guess what engine it has in it? That's right the 4.7L. Any ideas on what the process would be if i wanted to try to nab this from the insurance company or the junkyard?

What year is the Durango? I know all 2004+ Durangos use the CAN bus, while all Libertys use the PCI bus. You might have to swap the Durangos CAN PCM for a PCI PCM.

According to the '03 parts catalog if your TCM part number ends in 573AA (like SavageSS's) it's for the "multispeed automatic" (45RFE.) If it ends in 592AA or 192AE (like mine unfortunately) it's a "4 speed auto" (42RLE.)

OK, well looks like i found a couple sweet deals on some 4.7s. They're from WJs too, which should make things a little easier. Here are some links, any advice you guys can give would be great, i know the picture is just a stock picture they use for all their Jeep 4.7s, but if anyone has any personal experience with the seller, i'd like to know how things went. They're offering a 90 day warranty, so it can't be all bad.

Engine 1

Engine 2

Thanks for the help guys. Oh, and if anyone feels like spotting me....oh say....$2,500, i'd appreciate it

The seller states the engines come without accessories. You might end up needing to buy an ignition system, wiring harness, water pump, alternator, and A/C compressor. I'd send the seller an email to determine everything included.

All the acessories from the 3.7 should fit with no modification, the computer and wiring is a different story. You really need the whole harness to,that's why if/when I do this I'm looking for a complete donor vehicle to get all the "small" things off of it.

Yeah, i figured the accessories would mount up, but i'll probably need to find a whole new PCM and all the sensors i guess?

If you're good with electronics you could try building your own fuel injection and ignition system:

http://www.megasquirt.info/

I'm sure there are also tons of companies that make out of the box PCM solutions.

YIKES! I've built a few PCs before, but this looks pretty complicated. I'm sure i could figure it out with enough time though. I might just give that a shot. One thing's for sure, i'll have a lot more tuning options with an aftermarket PCM than i will with the factory one, and you're right, it might just be easier to setup. Unfortunately, that might mean a re-kit for the gauges and warning lights, as i'm not sure if i could get all that stuff to work with an aftermarket engine management system.
