Good backup plan, I appreciate it! 8) I like being the photographer!

Good idea! That way if Sarah does flop it you won't get hurt!

   At least I'll have documentation. Well, she might be wearing a 5 Point Racing Seatbelt and helmet, but I think she’ll be good to go. She’s a pretty smart cookie.

Over at IFSJA they dug up some info on that pic & the consensus was that it was a chop for an ad. Not a modern digital chop, but the old school double exposure/overlay kind.

J-trucks are pretty narrow. There is no way that a J-truck would be that close to falling off & you could put a hummer on it.

The trail isn't still that narrow... it was originally a mule-drawn trail. It was widened for vehicles sometime after that. I know at one point Willy's were considered the only vehicles that could fit on it. Not sure about the validity of the pic though.

Now I have been sitting here reading about this and watching the vids and one thing keeps coming back to my mind. I have ridden in a horse drawn wagon for about 25/30 miles over two days time and it was pretty tame old logging roads
so
can you imagine coming off of that mountain in a wagon  I can tell you that I would be a walking it all the way!
Now that would be an interesting picture wagons coming off the pass

I'd hate to be on that wagon when the mule's "brakes" went!

My grandfather told me about some the mining roads in the mountains around Park City, UT and he said that the wagons were set up to harness the team front or rear. Coming down they would put a 4 horse team on the back as drag weight and the driver would basically steer with the tongue while walking in front. He said that more than one guy got ran over by the wagon when something would come loose. Don't know if its true or not. But it was a great story when I was a kid. :D

You can't have much to live for if your going to drive that trail

It's an interesting trail, but the pictures make it look worse than it really is. The two toughest spots on Black Bear are the off camber to the left on a right turn near the Steps and that switchback shown on the video.

You have to pay attention to what your doing, but once you get down off the switchbacks you'll be saying... "it wasn't as bad as it's made out to be".

We've done Black Bear twice, once in our TJ and once in our stock height KJ.

We've done Black Bear twice now, on guided tours out of Ouray with Colorado West. At the time they were using late 80's bodied suburbans with a home-brew sky slider that went the entire length of the suburban except for roll bars that was canvas and snapped on and off. Our guide both trips was a guy by the name of Miller. If a full length Suburban can do this trail a KJ/KK won't be a sweat. We watched a F150 crew cab go in front of us. Its a tough trail, but I don't remember the clearance being any worst than engineers pass which we did in a stock GMC Jimmy 4x4.
