All you people who are howling about socialism need to understand what is at stake here. If these major American industries collapse the ripple effect in the economy will be awful. Not only will GM and Chrysler (and therefore Jeep) go under but hundreds of other companies that are dependent on them will fall as well. This will mean the loss of hundreds of thousands more jobs and with them more businesses....and more jobs ...and so on. This is what happened in the 1930's and it can happen again.

I disagree, the ripple effect will be felt, but I don't believe our country is solely dependant on the auto industry nor do I believe that we will suffer great pain. That's the problem with America, we are outsourcing our jobs while other countries are running circles around us. Read the book, "The World Is Flat" by Thomas L. Friedman and it will change your perspective real quick. You might be surprised how many “automotive” parts are made in CHINA and other countries.

I don't think its right that the president can demand that the president of a corporation step down :?

As I understand it, it's not so much a case of "demanding" he stands down - which the President certainly has no powers to do - more a case of "If he stays there you won't get any more of our money" which is something we all have the right to say.

Except to the tax man, of course!

what about the fact that the President is saying that Chrystler must merge with a foreign company if they want help......how does that help the American economy or create American jobs????

govt needs to step back and let the businessmen make business decisions and let the politicians make political ones (and as few as possible!) letting politicians make business decisions is how we got into this mess....letting it go on will only make it worse!

where does this madness stop?!
